Shaft Play with my Greddy 18g turbo????
Well I got my new (well used) 18g greddy turbo kit in the mail today with a Type 24 intercooler...
Everything looks perfect and in asome condition...
When I took the turbo and checked for shaft play. there about 2mm of play that I can move!!!! Is this really that bad? The turbo spins very freely and look good but am worried about the shaft play!
The last turbo I had, had about 1mm and it was fine and didnt burn any oil so am worried!!!
anyone ealse have this problem?
thanks

How are you determining it's moving 1 or 2mm? You must have really good eyes. The tolerances are so tight, without precision tools it's almost impossible to detrermine.
Also, your shaft will have a little play, but it shouldn't be able to touch the housing.

well I just talked to a few people and I only have up and down play not back and forth so it should be ok!!
and no it does not touch the housing at all!
and i just looked by eye its about 1mm or 1.5 mm

It will be fine- after my rebuild my shaft had a little play, as well. If it's new, you shouldn't have anything to worry about
The bad movement is if the shaft slides in and out of the housing. That would be indicative of a thrust bearing going out. Some lateral movement is normal and like the previous replies said, the blades shouldn't touch the housing.
