Default Stock Type-R needs upgrade path suggestions.

I just traded in my 2001 LS w/ CAI for a 2000 PY ITR. I LOVE it, no question. I'm completely stock, running Dunlop SP Sport 5000s to get me through winter. Come spring/tax time, I'm doing something, I'm just not sure what. Tires are a definite, wheels a maybe. I find the feel that you get from a 205 on a 6" wheel isn't too pleasant, almost a sidewall flex/overlap or something.

Would you guys recommend sticking with a nice 205/50/15 on stock wheels (Potenza S-03 maybe?), or would going to the Gram Lights (16x7 w/ tires $1300) be a better idea? I'm not going 17, too big, imo. The S-03 doesn't come in the correct size for the 16, so tire recommendations are encouraged

Beyond tires, I don't know what would be a good 'plan of attack' for my baby. the dealer is suggesting "good quality parts installed by someone who knows what they're doing". I've expressed warranty concerns/dealer drama/etc with them and they are all for me modding the R. I've got a 7yr/100K powertrain warranty to keep in mind, but the dealer is VERY accomodating.

Cliff notes: 15" or 16" wheels/tires, what else do you recommend on a stock R?

jdm 4-1 and a free flow filter ie; spoon, comptech, k&n.
and learn to drive your car. best mods in my opinion.
tires i bought Yokohama avs es100, in 195 50 15. I really like these on my slips and they seem to be holding up very well. and for 51 bucks a tire you can' t beat that.

I was actually considering Comptech intake, but wasn't sure if I should just get the filter or the whole system. I could always just buy the filter and get the rest later if I felt like it.

You run 195/50/15? Aren't you supposed to be running 205/50 or 195/55? I've got a few friends that highly recommend the same tire, in any case.

As far as learning to drive, I'm in southeastern CT. I wish there was somewhere to go locally I'm good with my car, I've been driving a teg since July 2001. I'm very comfortable with it, although during an emergency, I probably wouldn't have the skills I would like to.

The stock RE010's are awesome. Lots of people like the Falkin Azenis too.
Both work well on stock rims.

I say go with 13:1 compression, Sp00m stoker kit, open header, and drag slicks

for real though, my car seemed to respond really well to my AEM intake. Its a good cheap mod to do, of course you can also make one from parts at Home Depot and save yourself money.

Either JDM or aftermarket headers seem to make a nice difference in power and throttle response. Of course with that, you may need a different cat as well.

I personally like the stock tires. I havnt driven any other tires though so I dont know how they compare. The stock suspension is fine unless you want a lowered look, or plan to compete with the car.

A couple other popular things are a lighter flywheel and better clutch combo, as well as a JDM 4.7 or ATS 4.9 Final Drive.

I wouldnt get too crazy with mods if you dont intend to USE them, whether it be on a track, drag strip, or autoX course. For regular street or backroads driving, the stock setup is

Good luck

When I got my car, it had 23K on it, the dealer pre-owned certified it, but left me with some garbage tires. Matadors or something.

I had an AEM previously, I think I'm going with something else this time. As great as it was on the LS, I won't buy another until I have experience with other intakes to get a feel for it.

I was considering the Comptech header, because I'd like to keep the mid-range power. I was told if I planned on going over 190 whp, it'd be a bit restrictive though due to the 2.25" diameter.

When my clutch has to be replaced, I'll do a lighter flywheel and a better clutch. For now, it's fine.

I intend on using them, it's just a matter of finding what options I have in my area. NOTHING cool is in CT, except maybe Limerock, but that's at least an hour away.

I would love to go to the expo, but I'm unsure if I'll be able to make it this year

An hour away! Ha! I WISH I had a track that close. It takes me around 3 hours to get to VIR.

I went for these to try something different. I really like them now and I don't see any reason to go back. plus its saves you like 10 bucks a tire wich adds up in the long run. especially when you get tires as much as i seem to do.

Ok, well, my original question still hangs...

I'm running these SP 5000s because I had to get through winter, no dough for steelies, I just got the car. I plan on going with snow tires for next winter, unless I can get myself a beater.

If the car was yours, would you stick with 15s or go with Volk Gram Lights in 16x7? My main concern is the 205 overhanging the rim, leaving room for loss of traction or something. I'm assuming a 205 would sit better, with a flat sidewall, if it were a 7" width.
