Default insurance/license

i am 16, ive had my license since i was 15, and i was wondering if it would be possible to get a class m motorcycle license right now, and wait till im 18 until i buy a bike (so the insurance would be cheaper). I could borrow a friends bike and take a drivers ed course. What do you guys think?

I suggest you sign up for the MSF course. That way, they will train you correctly, plus you don't have to take the driving test. Once you've completed the MSF class, just go to the DMV and take your writing test (MSF course will train you for that too) and you're done.

Read more about it here http://www.msf-usa.org or just ask if you have more questions

I concur, second, and doubly support Vtec44's post.

1.) If you pass the MSF, you'll get a waiver for your driving test, hence you won't need your own bike.

2.) You'll get an insurance break for having succesfully completed the course

and the most important reason
3.) The MSF teaches a LOT of useful skills, and ingrains subconcious reactions into your system, so you don't have to think when a situation pops up.

I can think of 3 cases of the top of my head where having taken the MSF turned an unfortunate situation into a mutter and something to complain about later.

I'm pretty sure this can vary state to state.. check to be sure

This also depends on the insurance company. For example, State Farm will not give me a discount.

But take the course regardless.

Yep, my State Farm agent told me that after I took the course. But oh well.

All I have to say to this is,

State Farm quoted me the highest quote anyway, so they got no love.

I got a pretty decent deal from them, $418 a year for full coverage (including the passenger) for my 02 F4i and $150 a year full coverage for my 02 250R

Wow, great rates for 24. You're going to get a great break in rates come next year... unless your company doesn't follow the rule of 25 years of age. And no I'm not a pre-teen, just impressed w/ your f4i full coverage

I'm just messing with you man. Yeah, it does help when you stay with the same company for 8 years w/ no tickets or accidents. I'm hoping to get an even better deal next year.

I'm 19, no tickets, no accidents.

For my 98 CBR600 State Farm said $639/year Full Coverage with 500 Collision/500 Comprehensive deductables. But that is only if I insure my 88 Shitbox Tempo with them at $88/month for the least insurance I can get on it.

If I insure just the bike it's $1039/year.

My dad will pay for my car insurance, which is really cheap for him to do, but really expensive for me to do (cuz I'm a kid.)

Any other insurance places to try?

Is Progressive just ridiculous or what? They what $2500/yr for full coverage on a 2000 Suzuki TL1000R for a 23-year-old single male with no traffic record of anything what so ever. Does that sound right?

I am waiting to hear from my auto insurance company (Allstate) on insuring a 2000 929RR so I'll see.

State Farm seems to have decent motorcycle rates, but its best to have your vehicle insured there too, right? So how are they on the auto end?

EDIT: ...and I have had that safety course too.

It depends a lot on what state you're in. If you're in a "no fault" (aka, "your fault") state, bike insurance is sky high, since they're going to have to pay the majority of it even if some retard piles into you. I had this long "discussion" with the rep about it, he suggested I move.

As a side note WI is notorious, because insurance isn't required here, and it's a "no fault" state. Along with one of the highest state taxes and property taxes.

WI

Insurance changes a lot based on bike and company and agent. Progressive seems to rate theirs based on classification and displacement. Statefarm seemed (from what I saw) to do it on a make & model level. I've gotten 3 different quotes calling up at 3 agents from the same company on the same day, asking for the same thing.

Well, Allstate won't insure the 929RR nor the TL1000R I am looking at. Anybody got any other suggestions before I decide to get a cruiser? Should I try State Farm?

You have to have your car insured with state farm before they insure your bike. Have you tried AAA? I heard they have some pretty good rates too.

-Called AAA and they insure through Progressive, which I already have a quote from and it sucked.
-Nationwide wont insure the these two bikes either.
-Farm Bureau wont insure me cause I am less than 25 and my parents arent insure through them.

I went with State Farm- $115/month with $1000 deductibles on bike + $90/month for both my cars together. I cant wait to either turn 25 or pay the bike off.
