I dont have access to an oven. Will that affect the way the paint sticks to the valve cover? I was planning on just dusting red over the factory black. Its a high temp paint too.

 

i dont know about the oven, but sand that hoe before painting it.

 

Painting the valve cover works good but some people have powder coated theirs, it's more expensive but it'll last longer on the valve cover

 

There's all this talk of baking going around. Check this out..the assclowns that we are, all we used was masking tape, newspaper, and non-high temp paint (the motor is on its way out to make room for an SR20DET so we were just f'in around). Amazingly, it has held up for a couple of months, and has not lost its shine at all... no baking, and very minor prepping (we sanded a bit...and I mean a bit, as in very little sanding was done).

High temp paint will be MUCH better after you bake it and let it cool off.

If you don't and it gets hot, it's really easy to screw up if something with a hard edge touches it..

 

If it's painted strip it, degrease, sand, and degrease again. Paint with high-temp engine enamel i like Dupicolor. Spray light coats let dry and apply another untill the valve cover is evenly painted and smooth. When i was done with mine i stole my sisters hair dryer and heated it with that for a little while. Let it sit overnight and the next moringing left it in the sun for a few hours and it came out nice.
