(stupid question) anyone put a MORE restrictive exhaust on their R?
and why the hell would you do that? well, just out of curiosity...
I notice when standing behind the R, the exhaust (bone stock from the cat back) actually makes a nice low putter of a sound and when you get on it, it's not exactly completely silent. I just wonder how much of the noise I hear when I'm on the highway is the engine (from having no sound deadening material) and how much of it is the exhaust. On my old Integra LS, the exhaust was a tiny little beotch and it truely was silent. Since they say the R stock exhaust is much more flowing, I figured that translates to more noise on the highway.
Anyway... just curious if anyone has had a more restrictive exhaust for whatever reason (I can't imagine anyone has) and if they noticed less noise. I'm not like running out to replace my exhaust, just one of those its-snowing-outside-and-i'm-bored questions.

I've seen/heard of people (on HT, that is..) who have done this, only because they bought aftermarket, went to sell the car stock and sold their stock stuff. Don't know anyone who has done it for any other reason.
When I had my stock catback on, all I heard was the engine revving. When I put on my aem CAI and then my J's intake, all I heard was the intake, and a bit of the engine revving, never once the exhaust while in the car.
Now that I have my Fujitsubo RM-01A, all I hear is the exhaust, except when I'm in the upper rpm ranges, when I hear the intake, engine revs AND exhaust at all the same volume, making for a pretty loud cabin.
The only reason I can think to put a more restrictive exhaust on is if one is scaling back on mods, which in effect is scaling down power-wise. If you don't like all the noise, there are other alternatives besides returning to a restrictive system. I'm not sure I know anyone who has done what you are describing either.

my stock itr exhaust is currently on my mom's LS and its not any louder.
heh - well there we have it, thanks sgT... (and your mom is cool)Hmm, okay so bottom line, let's just say that someone is a complete ***** and can't handle the noise of their R and want to make it a little quieter for all the highway driving they do, what would be the logical options.
And take that statement with the following prerequisites:
1) no, I'm not necessarily talking about me, (and I'm sure not going to remove the AEM, JDM header or 2.5" cat as well to reduce noise) and besides I don't do that much highway driving
2) yes, this hypothetical person maybe should have just bought another car if they were going to be such a ***** about sound, but that's not the point of the question!

3) okay damnit, maybe we are talking about me, and maybe I just don't want to wear ear-plugs for a 3000 mile round trip to Pennsylvania for ITR Expo 03!
hehe.... yeah okay, I guess I am kinda couped up in the house tonight... stupid snow. Hmmm, maybe some of those Bose sound-cancelling head-phones?
i put a ****** silencer in my N1 (w/o screw) and it was pretty quiet until I got on the highway at full throttle....All i heard was like I had 2 stage vtec.....quiet then vtec engagement then loud *** exhaust rumble then I see a shiny pipe rolling down the highway in my rear view. lesson: put the screw on when installing silencer
If you don't like all the noise, there are other alternatives besides returning to a restrictive system.
A sensitive microphone in each earcup "hears" sound an instant before it reaches your ears. Simultaneously, advanced electronics recognize what you want to hear — music, an inflight movie, or nothing at all — and compare it to the noise you’d like to tune out. The system then calculates and generates an opposite signal that cancels the unwanted noise, leaving you free to enjoy your audio experience or just peacefully relax.
woah, cool

yeah yeah, I know... but 3000 miles of droning.. on and on and on. Now, if I could keep the pace at 90mph the entire trip, that'd be okay beacuse the drone kind of cancels itself out at 90, but considering I have just one more month to go until my driving record is clean, I don't think that will be happening

have you HEARD the ITR stock stereo? haha, maybe I should just use this as an excuse to upgrade the stereo

It helps, though. Upgrade is in order for both of us.....
Uncleben, you are a huge *****.
The car is not loud. Maybe louder than a Camry, but come on now.
I just drove for 6.5hrs in my N1-equipped car...I would love to drive 3,000 miles in your horribly loud stock R.

Ben, my exhaust isn't all that bad. After the first few months, the ringing in my ears cancels out the drone. If you're worried your stock exhaust will be too loud for your expo caravan, drive around town with an open header the week before, then hook up your exhaust right before you leave for PA. It will seem whisper quiet.
Not much point in quieting down the engine IMO.
Integras have a lot of tire and wind noise too at highway speeds. I'd rather listen to the engine than that.

We can just tow the ARRR behind my CiViC since my CiViC has mad torque....for me to poop on!

seriously, you dont know droning till you've driven with an aftermarket catback.

let me suggest the following. get some n1 type axleback or more open exhaust, have it in your car for few months, re-install stock exhaust, you will see how quet stock exhaust is.

And as a matter of fact, I have driven my hatch regularly with NO axle-back exhaust, and have also driven it open header. But wait, oh wait - guess what, that has nothing to do with what I'm talking about with the R and a 3000 mile trip.

I used a SOHC VTEC stock looking Dynomax Axleback (for a 92-95 Civic Si) on my GSRmotor/CXchassis hybrid to reduce exhaust decibels for a trackschool at LimeRock and man did it reduce top end power. It was like the motor was clogged very badly after 7000 rpms. Not good. Since then I have had 2.5" piping to an N1 muffler and it is sooooooo nice, its loud but the car pulls very hard.
Rob: see my above post. Haha, no seriously, thanks for the

I think we have already established that I am a ***** and don't like the drone of the R on long trips, but I deal with it, and have delt with it for a long time. I am just looking for options for a 3000 mile trip where I also have passenger(s) to consider. I'm really proud of all you guys who run 6" straight-through exhausts, good for you, congrats, pat on the back, woo-hoo. I guess I'm just crazy to not understand the point of having a loud-*** exhaust for street driving. 99% of the people on this board that have these loud-*** exhausts never hit the track once in their life. Of those 1% that drive their daily-driven R on the track, they hit the track 2-3 times a year. Of those, maybe 1% are in actual competition, and not just an HPDE. I fall in the HPDE class (in the R at least).
So some of you drive around with a loud-*** exhaust, probably damaging your hearing, for what, a little more power on the street? I'd rather sacrifice a few 10ths of speed (if that) at the track on those few days a year (autox is not even worth mentioning) and in turn have a quiet exhaust the other 355 days of the year for regular street driving. I also tend to enjoy drawing LESS attention to my R then more while on the street.
Now my hatch, that's a different story, it is being purposely built for racing. So I will drive it 1% (if it's even legal when it's all done) of the time on the street, and will drive it 99% of the time at the track. It therefor, will have the best performing exhaust I can afford, regardless of how much noise it makes. If that means it is loud as ****, so be it, it will be at the track where I care more about a few 10ths of improvement then noise, and I will have ear protection and a helmet too.
So if anyone has any useful information regarding what I'm trying to accomplish here, then by all means... <sandler> PROCEEEED </sandler>

REALLY? Wow, that's very insightful! You know, 'cause that wasn't joked about a couple times in this thread already or anything. PW!

- other than lean out your fuel maps - which SHOULD result in less noise - but might damage things
- other suggestion is more interior insulation - whatever the material they have in other integra models.
- another would be intake noise - how clean the filter is, the type of intake.
- and last, get some type of turbo muffler, or more restrictive muffler where exhaust gases take few turns before exiting through - don't know what sideeffects will this create.
i used to think type r exhaust was kinda loud - after 40K miles of less restrictive exhaust - any stock loud exhaust sounds quet to me...

Great stuff... keep it coming! Surely someone here is as much of a ***** as me and has done something with success to quieten up the R a little... at least for a temporary need/situation such as mine.
I think if your the type of person to be complaining about the stock exhaust on a Type-R then the car is NOT right for you. Sell it.
