JDM VTi D-series LSD (S20) and SRR final Drive (not compatiable)

Default JDM VTi D-series LSD (S20) and SRR final Drive (not compatiable)

if you have the JDM VTi LSD equipped tranny it doesn't work with the SRR final drive setup (4.9 or 4.7) . the bolt pattern on SRR ring gear and LSD is much different from each other.

while the JDM LSD/ring gear uses 14 bolts to hold the ring gear...the SRR has only 10 bolt ring gear. so its no go.

btw. i run into a similar problem with my Y21 LSD tranny when LSD failed and I got open diff for it...again it was different size and bolt pattern




btw. the final drive is for sale (SRR 4.9 for d-series) = $425US shipped

thats not even a LSD diff the hole has a bar in going through it.

Well **** that absolutely sucks.

I'd imagine that the SOHC guys would dream of having the LSD-equipped tranny along with an SRR FD, but from what you're saying it ain't happening.

I guess the solution would be to buy an aftermarket LSD like a Quaife that's meant for the original ring gear, which should be the same bolt pattern as the SRR, which in turn would allow the use of a kick-*** FD and an even better LSD, right?

indeed but then the price of the whole d-series tranny would be in the $1200-1400 range, which is just too damn expensive. the whole project was supposed to be under a $1500 and able to run 14's, that would include the motor, tranny and all other part (mounts, axles, ecu and so on).

with quaife the project would be in the $2200-2500 range which is only $1000 less then my B18C swap but with 40whp and 10lb.ft of torque less...

hopefully i can exchange it for the b-series FD which works or some other SRR parts.

All d-series 88-00 axles are the same I believe...

Something I've always been curious of . . . is the D15B's optional OEM LSD a helical LSD, or a clutch type? I've always believed that all OEM Honda LSDs are helical gear-types, but some people have also claimed that there are OEM clutch-based LSDs.

Shame that the SRR final drive didn't work.

Shame about the SRR, was wondering, saw a post a while back that hinted it wouldnt work, nice to know for sure, shame you found out the hard way

I posted the same question a while back, https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=701104 never got an answer

Would be intereted as i am currently running 10W40 semi-synth, and i am not sure its the best. Going to try Honda MTF next, but still want to know what honda jp reccomend

The LSD is a vicscous AFAIK, certainly not a torsen, only fitted to the type R's

Oh and The LSD axles are the same as the non LSD S20's, mine swapped fine

Helical (Torsen) LSDs were not limited to R-Types only.

It is definitely not a viscous differential. No such thing exists for a Honda, that I know of (other than the RT-4WD viscous coupling). It has to be either a clutch-type or a helical LSD.

I am pretty sure it is, as you can see stright through the diff when the axles are out

clutch diffs still have a crosspin and torsens are solid, no daylight, so its not either of them

AFAIK the torsen only came on the type r's and the EDM MB6 B18c4 1.8 Vti. The EG6, EG4, Del Sol and JDM DC2 Si are all viscous, not sure about the GSR. Know a couple of guys that have swapped the ITR box on the GSR's and noticed the diff, so they arent the same.

Most OEM's dont fit clutch diffs to FWD as the oils dont tend to be compatible with syncros and they need servicing

Anyway, still hoping for an answer, anyone know 100% what diff the JDM S20 LSD is, if its sealed or running in the tranny oil, and if so what oil i need?
