Default Engine Overhead Exhaust Cooling. dumb idea?

Ok, I work for a computer company that designs cooling solutions for all types of system.

I talked to several "car people" and they told me you dont want to actually "cool"
your engine but rather just exhaust the heat out. in other words "exit the heat leaving the engine at a reasonable temperature" IS THIS TRUE?

so what temp range would be the best to run an engine at all times?

I have a few solutions and ideas that may be a fun unique project but need to know what temps are best...

thanks

Are you talking about a fan driven system?

yes such as possibly cutting into the hood and placing two exhaust based fans sucking engine air and blowing it out...

maybe two 160mm aluminum fans. each pushing 150 cfm's or so. 300 cfms total.

Obviously the hot air rises to the hood so i figure it would be a easy way to lower engine temps.

Why not just cuts some vents into your bonnet?

just wondering...

would the engine gain performance if cooling was added to any component of it?

like say cold air into the intake? not like a CAI setup. but true cold air like 10-30F air....

o

So then why isnt this this done?

I mean how hard can this be to do?

A few ideas come to mind...

run the AC line to the intake (along with some natural air)
then when ya turn on your AC you get even better performance
and it will only stay on when needed or wanted.
and when not on the intake can just breathe normally...

??

because it take power to turn the AC compressor. there for you would cancel out your power...ANd they don't cut the hood above the exhasest mani cause it runs the risk of cracking or shorting out the wiring!

Ok, what are you trying to do? Cool the exhaust? Bad idea, the cooler the exhaust the less the catalysts work. Cool the engine? Unless your oil temp and coolant temps are hitting 200+F all the time for whatever purpose that you're using the engine it's pointless. There's no reason to cool the engine bay for the CAI either since it's still in the fenderwell.. So what are you trying to do?

so lets just say...

I could add COLD air to the air intake from a source other than the car would it benefit the performance?

Because I can produce cooling machines that put out 10 degree F air thans only wiegh 3 pounds or less and run off of electric source of small amount.

let me know

why not just try nitrous or a CAI?

I'm assuming that if will feed off the car so that the power "gain" will be continous? if is does feed of the engine how much of a power loss will the cooling machine draw? and how much of that do you think you are replacing?

you could do something tricky like replacing the power steering pump and running your machine off the power steering pulley. But I think for the amount of time and energy (and money) you would be putting into it, the power you gain will be minimal.

well one of these devices would be low cost. about $50.

and yes it could run very easily off the car battery or like removing the power steering and using that power source.

I Already have CAI. but was wondering if there was any HP gain by running really really cold air...

so would 10F-30F increase HP?

you won't notice enough of a difference to justify doing something like that.

i live in MN and in the winter the temp gets below 0F. it feels a bit faster at WOT but nothing like nitrous. so the engine sucking in cold air wont give you any significant performance gains.

but to each his own. do it and tell us what the results are.

of course it would!!! but the hard part is figuring out if all the stuff that you are adding in will make you LOSE power.

ie:

The AC device gives you a gain of 20 HP, but the device takes 15 HP from the engine to power it....you only gain 5 HP overall.

think of your device as sorta like a supercharger that is driven off the engine, in this case and in yours it would take power to make power. However a super is able to make more power than it loses, for your setup to be any good it has to be able to do the same.

You could make it battery powered, but then it would be limited cause the battery would need to be recharged.

Or it could be an externally mounted turbine powered by oncoming air coming through an opening. The turbine can be used to charge up the battery unit.

...or you could just buy a turbo or a small shot of nitrous.
