HELP!!! tranny will not go down.
alright,i did all the steps in the helms manual and when i go to lower the jack, the tranny will go down. the tranny goes down for a little bit, but then it just stops coming down. could it be that i am not clearing the mainshaft? in the helms it says, "pull the tranny away from the engine until it clears the mainshaft, then lower it on the tranny jack." my question is how do you pull the tranny away from the engine? thanks for the help.
the left driveshaft and the intermediate shaft are off. the right drive shaft is still hanging off the tranny and i figure when the tranny comes down, the shaft will come down as well. all the bolts are removed (i double checked). how do you pry the tranny away from the motor? any special we-todd-did techniques?
Ditto what Willard said. The long starter bolt is an easy one to forget to pull out. Pry the tranny away from the engine with a screwdriver and roll it away from the engine until the input shaft clears.
where exactly do you put the screwdriver? i think i might of unbolted the wrong bolt instead of the starter motor mounting bolt. is the starter bolt underneath the starter or is it the top bolt of the rear mount bracket? the pic in the helms manual is a bit confusing.
2-14mm on the starter
3-17mm on the top side
3-17mm on the front/bottom
1-17mm on the back side
2-19mm on the back side
screwdriver = find a crack and go for it.

As I recall, you'll need a long extension to reach the rear "hidden" starter bolt. The starter has 2 bolts; the rear mount bracket bolt is a different bolt altogether.
The "hidden" starter bolt is longer than the other starter bolt, longer because it also threads through the tranny and into the engine block. Thus, Helms calls the longer bolt a "starter motor mounting bolt."
2-14mm on the starter=??? i thought there was only one
3-17mm on the top side= upper tranny bolts
3-17mm on the front/bottom= right front mount bolts
1-17mm on the back side=????
2-19mm on the back side= rear mount bracket bolts
3-17mm on the top side= upper tranny bolts
3-17mm on the front/bottom= right front mount bolts
1-17mm on the back side=????
2-19mm on the back side= rear mount bracket bolts
so where is the other starter bolt (not the lower starter mounting bolt)?
i found my problem, i unbolted the upper rear mount bracket bolt instead of the lower starter bolt. i do not have to unbolted any other starter bolts right, just the lower starter motor bolt/
got the tranny down
. just to make sure, to get the pressure plate mounting bolts off you use an 11mm socket. you do not need a special socket or anything right?

remember the tranny has to be in reverse so it can clear. Make sure it isnt stuck on the shaft. just rock the thing till it comes loose
im pretty sure thoose bolts are 10mm not 11mm,make sure you have a 12point 14mm socket i belive to remove the FW if you are doing that also.
-Dave, who is getting bolt sizes confused today so 14mm might be right.. too much beer lately or something
