Default Methods on camgear tuning...

I did a search, the results were retarded...I'm looking for more direct opinions from my fellow R owners. Basically, what is the best method for tuning cam gears...i've heard a few different suggestions and am just looking for some info based on your experiences. Some people say to start +1, -1...and then +2, -2...etc....I was against this. Others have said to advance the intake cam until it stops making more power, than start to retard the exhaust, which is what I did at the last dyno meet. Then others have said to retard the exhaust first and then start to advance intake, which doesn't make sense to me at all....just curious to see how you guys go about adjusting your settings....let's drink

I'd like to know this info too. Everyone is complaining about this forum, and here is a legitimate question that goes unanswered. (he's posted this question before, and it didn't really get any reponses) I know alot of people have aftermarket cams, so what was your experience with tuning the cams?

I think I'm the one who said to advance the intake cam first till it stops making power.

Wutever you do....only change 1 variable at a time...

Yup, and thats what I did, Ended up at +3, -1 but I've heard other ways of going about setting them...oh well, i'll just play around at the dyno again....

Important thing is to re-check the timing after each adjustment of the cam gears, correct???

After adjusting the intake cam.
It is not necessary after adjusting the exhaust cam?

No chris, the distributor runs off of the intake cam only

PLEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAZZZZZZZZEEEEEEE!!!!! Wil someone answer this?!

If any of you are still running OBD2, were your cars able to idle after messing w/ your gears? I dyno tuned my Si and the idle went to sh@t after adjusting the gears (+2.5 intake, -4 exhaust). Made great power, but literally wouldn't idle (it would stall) and threw codes left and right.

Did V-AFC stuff, but that didn't ruin the idle (as far as I know).

I've since zeroed out my exhaust cam and I plan to go OBD1 soon.

I'm also not sure if my 9.1 lb flywheel aggravated the situation.

You either make power or you idle with less power.

I dyno the intake movement first, make sure the timing is right along with the fuel before adjusting the exhaust cam.
As for knowing which way to go first, my car seems to be able to tell me with one run if it will make power by advancing or retarding the intake/exhaust cam.
Some, and I did this for a while with stock cams, use to adjust by where the motor made the most static compression. I would then take it to the dyno to tune the fuel, and most times the cam gears were about dead on...

click here for Tuan's article ...you'll have to register probably, but I think it will answer a lot of your questions on cam gear tuning.

Thats what cam gears do, move the power band. So either you move the band to make more top end power and sacrafice idle qualiites(lumpy) or you move your gears back to idle nice but lose power.

Perfect example is Toda cams, they can idle like stock but wont make power, tune it to where it makes power and the idle gets lumpy.

OK, thanks--that makes sense.

So does this mean that even if I go OBD1, the car is still going to stall out if I dial my overlap back in???

I could care less about lumpy idle, but the constant stalling is unacceptable. I don't like needing to heel/toe while waiting at a traffic light

Again, my flywheel could very well be making things worse, but I am very curious to hear from people running OBD2, tuned gears and tuned V-AFC. No one ever speaks up about it (at least in Civic circles).

I'll do that when I go OBD1. I've tried it as crazy as -20, but (especially on a hot summer day) I throw code 45's 'til the cows come home.

That'll definitely be the method I use though.

Thanks for the input--good to know that it actually works.

BTW, you aren't pulling this off w/ OBD2, are you??? If so, what voodoo hex are you using?
