Default egt probe install but what does these temp mean?!!!

hey,
i just got my egt probe installed and finished wiring up the gaugue itself, i am at idle-gauge reads 300-400degree, at ~4K rpm and the egt gauge shows me 1000degrees!! sometimes when i accelerate it will show me 1100 degrees!!

what does this all mean? the more rpm the more the heat the gauge will show. so, how do i konw that i am running lean/rich?

i am really confuse ont he usefullness of this gauge.

your fine, at about 1200-1300 expect your pistons to melt

wah!! i am damn close to melting my piston? its a stock b16a motor the only real thing done to it is advance timing. you think this is a problem?

if it helps, i install the probe at the collector. trubo u said ur hitting 1400-1500, where did u install the probe at? and does ur guage only run up to 1600?

seems like u have some knowledge for using this egt gauge can u tell how to make use of these temp i am getting? more so what do they mean? how do i know that i am running rich/lean? i dont want to have a useless gauge!

ok,
well mine is tapped directly into the exhaust manifold..

as far as the temps go, higher temps can mean lean, and lower temps can mean rich..
but here is the twist..
in order to use this gauge you really must have some know how of what you are doing, because you can make the temps lower by advanceing timing, and you can make them higher by retarding the timing.
Also you can have high temps if the car is overly rich and the fuel is staying the manifld and reburning.....

and yes on most dyno tuned cars you will see about 1400-1500f on a 1600F gauge..

there is just to many variables to just look at that # you are getting and saying that the enigine is this or it is that...

temp also very by where they are mounted. Mine is mounted right after the turbo (recommended by autometer) I see about 1300 at full throttle.
