Are there any B16 fans left in this world?
I have been in the slow, tedious, money deprived state of building a B16 for my 98 hatch for a while now. Seems like every time I read a post about a B16 it turns into a B18C story about how B16's are said to be such a waste of time by opinion. I am an all-motor fan myself and have been heavily weighing the options of finishing the B16 or possibly spending less money and getting a complete ITR swap that would have almost as much power stock as my fully built B16 would. If money wasn't so much of a hinderence I would just say F--K it and buy a B18C and build it but that isn't an option. If I went down the road of getting an ITR swap it would get put in w/ stock trim because I simple can't afford to buy one and build it. Mainly my thoughts are that I already have a B16 block with some machine work already done. I would much rather have an engine that I built from the ground up instead of someone elses used and abused swap that happens to make almost the same amount of power. Sorry if it seems like I am whinning a bit, I am just curious how many, if any, out there would still build on a B16 platform without boaring or stroking to 1.8L?
Thanks for your time guys....

I lot of people still like the B16a for its affordability and decent reponse to modifications. However, I think this is the wrong forum for this discussion.
Answer: Why have a B16a when you can have a B17a?

The b16 is a pretty nice motor IMO. Not a torque monster by any means but a nice motor. The b18 is obvisously a nicer motor but your paying an extra grand(at times) for it. I'd rather fix up a b16, due to affordablity, but thats just me. Stick w/ it bro!

My car came with a B16A (2000 Civic Si) so I'm not planning on swapping it out for a B18C any time soon or bore my engine out. My friend swapped a B16 into his 90 Integra and it is pretty sweet.
I think for the newer cars it doesn't make sense to use the B16 because the newer cars are heavier and the 1.6L is quick but lacks torque compared to the larger engine.
Bang for the buck, the B16A can't be beat. You get nearly B18C1 power for a $1000 engine. Even a mildly built B16 can make very good power. Just look at the Speed World Challenge cars running highly built B16As... they can keep up with ITRs!

They are a poor choice for motors. Sell it to me.
I think that people attempt to put them in heavier cars, where the torque disadvantage is only highlighted. The 00 Si is a good example, weighing nearly 2600 pounds. At race weight, though, it's a different story.

I like my relatively stock OBD1 B16A. I swapped it in to replace my busted B17A.
Peak numbers were 149.6 HP and 105.0 FT/LBS.
Specs:
Stock P61 (92-93 GSR ECU)
JDM 92-95 B16A
Stock 10.4:1 compression ratio
B17A airbox modified for cold air
B17A exhaust manifold
2.25" crush bent exhaust
Timing advanced to 18 degrees
Gas was 93 octane
No A/C or PS belts

I'm running a B16, although I'd prefer a B18C. I feel that if I had a B18C with less mods I'd be just as fast or faster.
My setup
99 B16A2
Comptech Icebox
Skunk 2 stage 1 cams, valve spring and ti retainers
Skunk 2 intake manifold
CTR N1 crank pulley
JDM ITR 4-1 header, test pipe
Fujitsubo RM-01A exhaust
Skunk 2 ECU and Fields VTEC/fuel controller
ATS 4.9 F/D and Quaife.
When this engine goes, built B18c

Nice to see people still wringing out thier B16's. When I get done it should last plenty long enough for me to get with the program and get a B18C. Even if that's a couple years down the road I don't think my driving skills will outperform a B16 any time soon!
Im running a B16A with no mods, and a dirty *** OEM air filter, rammed in a EK hatch.
I can hold my own on the track with mildly modded ITR's.
Why? Good suspension. Adequate braking. Decent driver (im gettign better...)
You will be how surprised and how quick they can be. A lot of people under estimate them. I like them. With a great rs ratio the engine can be revved skyhigh, and responds great with the shorter gearing.
I say if your going into a hatch than do it. If its going into a Civic coupe or heavier than go GSR/ITR. Its all dependant on weight. For my car of 2300lbs ready to roll its fine. And its STOCK!!!!!
I'd rather spend the extra money i save from buying a B16 over a B18 into HPDE's or new pads/rubber.

My B16A is fun as hell.
168.5 hp, 110 tq to the wheels. This is untuned (cam gears at 0,0) stock bottom end.
I don't have crazy cams either just CTR with 10.6 compression (2 layer headgasket)

i like blackanese's b16 too.
wish mine put down that much hehe
i love my b16 but not enough torque for a coupe..

I won't have to worry about lack of torque. My very built LS/VTEC
will be in by the new year
I'm VERY happy with the performance of my b16 in a 2100 lb car BUT I feel that if I put a b18c1 block on my modded b16 head I would be a second or 2 faster on the auto-x courses.
There's another CRX that always is 1 second faster than me and he has a b17. He doesn't have a LSD, He runs Slicks, and has stripped his car and put his batter in the back. I'm still only 1 second behind... Hell, before I ran my Azenis I was 4+ seconds behind so I can't complain TOO loudly.

LOL, I am a B16 fan and all-motor supporter! But I have a GSR swap in my hatch. To top it off, I want to go to a 2.0 liter block asap.
The secrets of B16 buildups are shortest ratio tranny possible, spend all of your money on making a better breathing head with big cams and hi redline... just like Roger Foo proved as a capable race winning setup!
If I had to start over and had a B16 swap, that is what I would add-
an ATS 4.9 FD and Skunk2 or TODA cams/gears/valvetrain and a chipped ECU

I have a JDM B16A that is going to be a track car, good motor.......just needs some work (torque)
umm...some work?? you have a type R that should be your track hoe car....daily drive teh hatch put some nawz and roll everyone on the street!

b16a is still awesome.

my own "bone stock" bottom end b16a (head never been off the block):
and of course my old site dedicated to B16A. http://g-speed.com/pbh/b16a

I just wanna say that this is a very informative thread for me!
I thoroughly enjoy my 1.8L ; the added torque is a big
. I chose this for my car for both reasons... the 129lbs. of torque and 178 hp top end. It pull very nicely, and IMO, a great choice.
