Default Final Drive and Gear ratio

Ok I know how individual gear ratios work, but how does the final drive relate to them? What does the final drive ratio tell you?

For example, I was looking at the new Neon SRT-4's gear ratios, and they all seem to be pretty close. Then the final drive comes out to be 3.5xx

Edit: I'm not sure what forum this would go under, but I usually hang out in this one, and a lot of knowledgeable people are in here.

3.5 is what my mom has in her truck. sucks for them they can only rev to 6k. oh and why are u lookin at neons???

what are the individual gear ratio's though? I think i saw them once and 3rd/4th was similar to LS, while 1/2 were like a b16a. 4th gear does like 130 @ 6k rpms in that car i think. plus its got big *** 17's w/ big tires to make the ratios even longer.

LOL, I was looking at them to scope out the competition. They got a TD04H-16G, bigger than my GReddy 15G so I'm going with a T3/T04E. Gear ratios:
1st: 3.647
2nd: 2.045
3rd: 1.367
4th: .947
5th: .756
FD: 3.526

Ok so back to the final drive....What does it tell you?

Yea, still not sure

bascally it determines how long ur gears are hehe. i dont know how to explain it but did u ever have like a 18 speed bicycle when u were little? it had 3 gears for the sprocket by the crank and like 6 gears on the rear. if u had the chain on each of the smallest gears it was really easy to peddle, but if u moved the chain to the biggest sprocket it got harder to peddle. u were changing the gear ratio's. basically the big sprocket is like a taller(numerically lower) final drive and the small sprocket is like a shorter(numerically taller) final drive. the final drive in combination w/ the drive gears is what determines ur final gearing. does that make sense or is it just a bunch of blabber?

Drive axles spin once per [plug in you final drive here] rotation of the tansmission output shaft.

Default Re: Final Drive and Gear ratio (Quiz)

For individual gears, the number specified for each gear is equal to the amount of rotations of the engine compared to the output shaft of the tranny. This means..... 4.09 first gear= 4.09 revolutuions of the engine per revolution of the tranny output shaft. This is what gives you more power and rev up faster. As you change your gears (upshift) the gears need to be longer to compensate for the car moving at a faster rate (your wheels are spinning faster of course). The "gear" ratios will determine the rpm loss from upshifts, and the final drive will determine how much faster the gears will rev up.

In typical honda in the same tranny and tires. 4.8FD is high acceleration. 4.4 is high speed. 4.015 is higher speed. 3.5 FD(not avail) is pushing it.
