Default Wireing on JDM tails

Ok i have seroius issues here.
I wired up my JDM taillights today and ran into some problems.
Everything works fine except the brake lights and taillights
When i push the brake pedal, the lights come on but the tail lights ( turning the headlights on) wont turn on.
At other times when i turn the tail lights on , the brake lights wont turn on.
All fuses are good.
All wires have been checked for proper color coding.
Anyone have any clue as to what i screwed up??

my plugs are different from the taillights.
The JDM lights are a grey plug and the car (and US lights ) have a white ish plug.
I duno why they are different. Is it cause my car is a 89?
But anywhoo the taillights work now but the only the passenger brake light works on occasion.
I had my friend pump the brakes continuously and out of say 10 times the light only came on 3 times.
Any ideas anyone?
Oh and all i did was cut one plug off each side and solder the wired together.
While the plugs were different the color wires were the same.

Do some search on archive. I remember reading a lot on this issue. Anyways, from all that, I do recall that with an 89 u have to do some rewirng. There's one thread that actually said what u had to do. I was gonna purchase JDM's but then just reverted to SeriesII for my 89 instead.

But yeah, it's not straight plug and play if I remember correctly.

ok now im really confused.
I couldnt figure out for the life of me what was wrong.
Went through and checked all plugs and sockets to make sure they are all getting juice and all were fine.
So just for the hell of it i replaced all bulbs ( they were all good ) and now everything works fine.
No more occasional brake light, it works evertime.. all of them.
Im soo confused but oh well i have JDM taillights.
Thanks for the tips fellas.

Glad to hear they are working, but you should have just used your 89 tailight harness. Thats what I did, it works great. Ryan

yep, did the same thing with my crx. it was way better; no cutting, soldering, and less of a headache!

with mine I just took the bulbs out of my stock lights and put then in the jdm harness. then all worked fine.

Yeah i have no idea why my plugs were different but there was no way around cutting and splicing.
Oh well.. one of the many wonders of the world.
Im just happy they are finally working!

like the others up above said, if you swap the tail light wiring harness, you shouldn't have had to cut, splice and solder anything.

you probably got a 90-91 tail light for your 89.
