First every auto-x action pic
Well I didn't won't to waste a thread on the racing forum so I thought I'd post here. BTW this was my 3rd event but the first time someone ever got a good pic.
man, now if you had hit 2... that would have had a major "WOW!" factor!
doesn't it suck when something cool happens and that's the only thing someone didn't get a shot of at an event??

That was my first run, I got a 60, then a 59, then a 57. Currently I ranked in the top 25% overall standings, (36th out of 147) 3rd in novice, and got 6th in STS.

Come summer season I'll be getting a set of Axenis 225-45 17.

I wouldn't do that if I were you. 225/45/17s are 1" taller in O.D., that would hurt your acceleration. IMO, go with a tire size that's +1% or -1.5% of the stock O.D. The only other Azenis that would work better for the Prelude is 215/45/16. These are almost 2% smaller in O.D., you'll get a better acceleration but the 215 width is still too narrow.

Edit:
Vwong great website. You are one hell of an auto-xer. This past weekend I learned to look far ahead in the course and the benefits of that,(shaved 2 seconds) and not to break when in the process of turning. DUH.
I notices in some of your videos you hardly ever breaked, like the video of you in the Prelude at the AFB.[Modified by RY8127, 5:30 PM 12/17/2002]

Yokohama tires grip excellent... you'd never know they were a 300 treadwear by driving on them. i have them as street tires on both my Hondas, and i won't ever use any other tire than them on the street

I knew it all along. So if not the azenis then what. I know Yokahama produces a tire similar to the azenis but its tread rating is 300 which sucks for auto-x I guess some 215/40-17 ultra high performance tire. Any thought vwong. I should have never got the 17s. ooops.
Another way is to sell your 17" and get yourself some lighter 16". Then you can choose to run either 215/45/16 Azenis or 225/45/16 S-03.

vwong - since you have both an integra and a prelude, which do you prefer for auto-x and road racing? I went out to buttonwillow to run on the course there last week and thought about how my roomates integra would have felt - i would have liked to try both cars.. the prelude with its easy steering, and the integra with its heavier but more precise feeling steering
btw- nice site

I have some yok. parada spec II' for sale..check my sig. they are 215/40/17 closer to stock OD so it won't hurt your accel as bad.
300 w/out wheels less than 6k on them no wear at all.

I'll have to disagree with you on the steering. The Integra has a lighter feel due to the 1.X degree of positive caster, while the Prelude has a heavier feel because of the almost 5 degree of positive caster. Another disadvantage of the steering system of the Prelude is that it tends to "stiffen" up under quick transitions like slaloms. You really have to prepare for it, use all your strength to "fight" with the steering wheel. Marsh (I think he's on this board) found a possible cure to this, but I have yet to make this change.
Both cars are fun to drive in the auto-x. But I can't really tell you which one is quicker since I haven't done a comparison test on the same exact course layout. I would think that both will be neck-to-neck.
Thats a good photo, but you should really try and get onto a road course soon. The prelude really shines in that environment!! I constantly track my '99 prelude, and find it to be competative, relativlly speaking.
big willow:
I really think everyone should do at least one open track day or hpde!
Regarding the tire issue, on the street, I run 215 45 17's on my 17*7 volk gtn's, but on the track I use 215 45 16 azenis over rota slipstreams. The difference is noticable, in terms of acceleration, but not so much in turn-in, the added rotating mass doesn't really hurt turn in on our car thanks to the added caster!! But, I will be moving up to 225 50 16 v700's in the future, or I'll just just stick w/ the 215 azenis, as I think the perfomance, in the dry, of the azenis is better than the s03, and they are cheaper to boot.
On the topic of integra v. prelude, on the track, I've done about 3 track days in a '00 itr w/ teins (same as my prelude) and the same size tires, and make of tire. The itr is a point and shot kind of car, very nible and responsive. The engine and powerband make the car driveable, in nearly any corner, and if your keeping it around or above 5000 rpm, it fantastic.
The prelude, on the other hand, is a momentum car, and if you want to be fast, you have to be ultra smooth; that is, you have to set the car up and keep speed through the corner, as the car isn't as responsive to the throttle (read: needs to build up speed), and driving the two back to back you can really feel the prelude's weight, but if you're a smooth driver, you can keep up w/ the itr, at lease until you hit the straights, the the itr will step away, not much, but a little.
The single greatest thing you can do for your h22, put in an 8lbs fidanza Al flywheel, night and day difference!
