Default $23 muffler robbing power?

This question somewhat stems from another topic on here however here is mine. I'm running 2.5" all the way from the turbo and when I had it all made I didn't have a muffler with me. So I had them make it all up and when I got home I cut and clamped my muffler in there. I don't want much sound at all but I was looking for a decent flow. As $ was tight I bought a muffler from work...a cherry bomb turbo muffler(the larger bodied of the 3 that they carry) Its a little bit louder then stock however I'm happy with the sound. The REAL question is how much does one of these hinder performance? Would it be a good idea to buy a more expensive muffler?
I don't wanna come off as an idiot because I'm asking a basic question however mufflers have never been my strong suit.

Currently running:
89 crx si
d16y8
14b custom turbo(read:hf manifold)
450cc injectors
zdyne gold
9 psi
88 audi 5000 intercooler(rewelded end tanks)
fluidyne rad
2.5" crush bent exhaust...hollow cat

A Cherry Bomb is certainly not the best muffler in the world. You would probably do alot better with something else. Although the Cherry Bomb is straight through, it has a louvered core, which is a no-no in the world of performance mufflers. Your best bet is to get a non-louvered, straight-through muffler like a Magna-Flow or Borla.

Alright man you are wrong a cherry bomb is the best flowing (muffler) I have evr seen. I went to school at UTI in Phoenix we had a couple flowbenches their and are teacher showed us the differences in mufflers once and a cherry bomb flowed better then Dynomax, flowmaster and even a straightpipe. The straight pipe was shorter so it didnt flow as well. I think cherry bomb flows good enought for you. I just cant stand the sound. Also the 2 1/2 is killing you not the muffler

i know you said that your piping was 2.5 but if you want a really quite system, you should go get a stock tsi muffler. cause i want my car to sound quite, so thats what im doing. but...i think that the inlet into the muffler is 2'?

I was passed this bit of knowledge on from a fellow rex'er a while back: Even on a turbo setup, on a 4 cylendar crx like mine, more than 2 inches may obstruct constant flow..

the only thing that could make my system better is a resonator so it dosent sound like i hit a bee hive with a large pole..

to make a correction, I don't have the straight thru type like those red cherry bombs that everyone thinks of...it looks like a stock replacement muffler. The reason I didn't go with the cherrybomb straight thru(resonator) is because of the sound.......Are y'all saying that a resonator might help? With the crush bent 2.5 don't ya think that perhaps it works out to be about 2"?
