A year end local championship course by who other than....Roger Johnson.

Looks killer, I'd love to be there - but it's only open to SCCA members and top class placers, neither of which I am. Maybe I will be after the integra is finished though....cause if something like this is done for 2003 - I'm there!

They're now naming corners on an autocross course. Someone has WAY too much time on their hands....

LOL. But really, naming the "course features" is nothing new, well at least in the Houston SCCA Region. Take the following for example:

August '01

September '01

November '01

January '02

February '02

April '02 (National Tour Day 1)

April '02 (National Tour Day 2)

Havent seen one like this yet, but I will on January 4th. You should come and work at the event, they are letting workers run for free during a practice session later that day I think. Check with one of the officials on that. Looks like a lot of fun!

You should come! Free track time is always good.

Wait.. working is optional in your region???

In the Atlanta region EVERYONE that runs works in a rotating Run/Work group fashion.

With the turnouts we have it is sometimes ridiculous the amount of people we have out on course. 20+ people for a 60 second course means you get about 2-3 cones to watch for... heheh

<edit> Love the BMW Knocker sweeper... how true.. how true... </edit>

No, working is not optional for regular Autocross events. This event is a special invitation only "shoot-out" event for the top placers in each class on the morning of Saturday, January 4th. In the afternoon there is a special practice session, and if you volunteer to work the morning "shoot-out" then the afternoon practice is free! And the afternoon practice is 20+ runs. The First actual autocross event of 2003 is on Sunday, January 5th.

I'd love to go to the "shoot-out" and Saturday practices, but you have to be an SCCA member (which I am not). Plus I'm not availble on saturday until after 3:00pm.

Hoping for VTEC (but probably not getting it)
...and Roger Johnson has an S2000...LOL, that guy is nuts.

Big-*** skidpad ... "BMW Knock Maker" ...

As for the naming corners comment, it's pretty common at national events (and apparently any course Roger "Texas" Johnson designs) to have sections named. It gives the course personality. And personality goes a long way.

We name corners at our events as well. I can see two good reasons to do it.

1. It's a good way to have some fun and add levity to an event.
2. It helps you discuss the course with others. IE: it is clearer to say I was balancing the car on throttle through the BMW knock sweeper instead of I was balancing the car on throttle through that sweeper sort of in the middle part of the course.

Those are the best kinds....like when they have them at actual road tracks, and they pinch in the corners a bit with cones and add a slolam here and there.
The events at Roebling Road are usually like that....and I went to a Solo II this year at CMP. That was real fun!! We got ten runs!!

Roger Johnson is the man! His course designs are the best I've ever driven. He knows that autox is mainly about having fun (safely) and he incorporates something really cool into every course. Wouldn't hurt my feelings if he designed all the Nat's stuff from here on out.

He is the man... Nine time Solo 2 National course designer, and we have em here in Houston!! He is putting on a course design class on Jan 11th for anyone who wants to attend, only $15. Go to the http://houscca.com website for more info.
