Default ***A word of advice to avoid theft.***

I'm sure most of you know that you can go to Honda and get a key made by your VIN number. A lot of the thefts I have read about lately have not been forced-entry (i.e. no broken glass or such). This means someone had the elusive "master key" or they themselves cut a key or had a friend who could.

This recently happened to a friend of mine and we have reason to believe it was planned with a cut key. He got cams and various other things installed in the block, got it tuned and a week later the car was stolen...ignition untouched.

My advice? Cover up your VIN number at the bottom of your windshield.

Regardless, they can tow it, hotwire it, etc. its just one more thing to give you an advantage.

If I get a hold of any of you thieves, I will stake you to the hot Arizona ground, cut off your eyelids so you have to stare at the sun and cannot blink, rip your fingernails off and pour salt on them, cover you in honey and pour ants on you, and last but not least I will wrap you in wet cowhide so that when the hot arizona sun dries it out, it will squeeze you to death so that your insides squirt out through every orifice of your body.

May all of your cars stay safe.

Honda

Mods, sorry for posting in two sections, I just want to help people out who may read only one sectio

Me three

This was just posted by MadTownHonda in the civic section. I posted it both places to help out all Honda owners.

It's a $5000 fine to cover up your VIN. Trust me, I almost had to pay for it once but I got lucky.

Not sure why it's illegal. I was told twice to remove it. Once by the City parking enforcement, they just gave me a warning. The next time it was by city of madison police, they made me remove it right there. Said it was punishable by up to $5000 in fines and some other bad ****.

If anybody can find out why, I'm sure we would appreciate it. I personally don't want anybody but myself to have access to the VIN.
I am going to check into this because I think thats a retarded law. You have ownership of the VIN, why should anyone else need it? It is YOUR car.

I will keep mine covered until a person of the law says something to me.

Anyone else have any insight into this law?

Remember that dealership employees have pretty easy access to your VIN weather its covered or not... invoices, etc.

True, but they dont know which car is yours unless you regularly bring it in for service at a dealership, or they have an adress from when you bought the car/service...It is possible you bought the car from a private party and then the dealership knows nothing about your ownership, where you live, etc.

I typed a confusing sentence, but does that make sense?

I dont take my car to a dealership. When I bought it, it was a stock DX, so even if they had my VIN from when I bought my car, they would never know its fixed up and thieves are not going to waste their time investigating all hondas and my VIN info would be useless to them if obtained through dealership papers...an ITR is a tad different story as it is a hot item and gauranteed to make them profit, consequently, it is worth their time to investigate.

Here's another idea: can you get your lock cylinders replaced so they're not VIN-trackable? True, you'd have some weird aftermarket key, but still...

There was another member here who suggested to switched everything (doors, ign, ecu?) with another person with the same car. Theives can use the VIN to make a key but it will not be for your car.

Please keep us informed about the legality of covering up the VIN.

That is some scary ****. Get a VIN get a key that can't be good. Reminds me of Gone In 60 Seconds when they stole the Mercedes vehicles. Now I have one more thing to worry about. Damn thieves

Going to need a lot of stickers since the VIN is on every window, at least on 97's

Someone suggested this a long time ago, and I think its a good idea. I do it.
However, its extremely easy to open the door without a key. Its also easy to start the car without a key.

Not all 97s are like that, window etching is done by dealers after the fact.

However, Im not sure what year it started, 98 I *think* (I know my 98 Prelude had this), where just about every body panel has the VIN affixed to it.

there is no security at acura about getting a new key cut... i had a key cut for my '00 LS. i just went up with VIN #. this key was for the doors tho, maybe they would of asked for somthing if i wanted an ignition key. the car is not even in my name yet, it was a previous theft recovery too.

Well when we go to honda we cover our vin's for sure. Myself as well as some of my friends believe that there are people at honda that are getting the vins and stealing cars. If you take your car to the dealer they have all the info they need to steal your car.
