Excessive smoke at WOT.
1998 Honda Prelude SS, stock exhaust, Injun Air Intake.
Since it started getting cold outside, ( or at least now I just noticed this problem in my rear view mirror.)
When I slam the gas at a light to WOT, or drop down a gear to get more power in SS and hit the gas till I rev at 7500 RPM - I see this: quite alot of greyish colored smoke!!
my Oil Level looks fine, and so do the rest of my fluid.
I am pretty good at doing my routine maintence stuff.
What do you think is causing this?
Or is it just the fact that now that its so cold, that I can see my exhaust more.
Tonight on the highway, with Bimmer behind me I slammed the pedal, and the cloud was fairly big I left him soak in. ( the power is there, I dont see any signifigant change in loss.)
If it helps: the smoke looks like a simple peel out cloud.
Thanks in advance for your help, Im new to this board.
I was TripHop on Hondaprelude.com if anyone is from there.
Also my suspension is acting up.. so I might be posting about that soon too.

My guess is it's probably always been there and it's probably more black than grey right? I've always heard that Hondas dump fuel at WOT to prevent running lean and in turn blow a little smoke at high revs and WOT. I've noticed this w/ both my Civic and my Prelude. As long as it's black smoke (hey black could look like dark grey) I wouldn't worry about it. More than likely it's always happened you just happened to notice it the other day. If your not burning oil (is that possible w/ a H22?) excessively I wouldn't worry. HTH
well to be honest I always heard black smoke -worry, grey smoke - clear.
I dont see "BLACK" smoke, it looked greyish to me... I just dont want to get the runaround if I mention it to the dealer. Thanks...
anyone else have an opinion?

my friends and i call it "the mysterious VTEC smoke" b/c it only seems like it starts at WOT when VTEC engages, but yes, black smoke is normal... the back of my teg and my Prelude stay black all the time it seems like

It's not BLACK BLACK smoke...more of a greyish, darker cloud of smoke since it's mixed with the rest of the exhaust fumes.
My 4G with straight exhaust can shoot fireballs after a nice long run. My buddies thought I blew something when we ran from a roll...but it was just some nice flammage...
BTW, my WHITE rear bumber is speckled with dark residue. I don't even bother trying to clean it anymore. I think I just need an AFC to tune down the fuel.

Generally there's three forms of smoke that will come out of your exhaust unless somehing is incredibly weird/wrong.
1. Black: Extra fuel being burned off. Just means you're running rich. It's fine.
2. Blue: You're burning oil, possibly blew a piston ring. Do a leakdown test.
3. White: You're burning coolant, possibly blown headgasket. Again do a leakdown test.
