Default do i *really* need cam gears for ITR cams?

well I want to tune my car ('99 GSR w/ ITR cams, ITR cam gears, VAFC, exhuast and DIY intake) once i get my header. i was planning on getting cam gears too but that would delay any tuning due to money issues. seeing as ITR cams are stock cams, and i'm using the gears they came with (although i'm pretty sure they're the exact same thing as GSR gears - can someone confirm this?), would i truely need cam gears? i figure any adjustments they would make would be minor gains because they _should_ be timed good from the factory.

cliffnotes: do i really need cam gears for my ITR cams in a stock engine when i tune (with VAFC)?

i got itr cams in my gsr motor and off the bat with stock gears it felt good but there was a big dead spot before vtec. i have no vafc just a skunk2 ecu. i put skunk2 gears on and it cleard up the dead spot IMO it is money well spent. if feels so much stronger throughout the rev band.
id have to say yes there is a difference and since you have a vafc it will be even better

I heard that +4 on the intake side and -1 on the exhuast side helps. But what do I know?

oh but you had the ITR fuelmap from the ITR ECU... would it be much different with a stock GSR fuelmap?

at first i ran it on the GSR ECU. then i picked up the R ECU. in fact i took both ECUs to the track in seattle for a weekend of racing. even with the better fuel maps both ECUs turned out similar times. the only time that i got something impressive was when i pulled a 2.0 60ft. other than that they were identical.

you don't need to have them, but it's a good thing since it'll help you tune your car to all your modifications at one time. istead of just seeing it as tuning the cams, think of it as tuning the cams to your car with your i/h/e vafc. if you plan to add more mods in the future, you should definately get some gears to help with tuning in the future.

IM if you have any questions. good luck!
