What does oil on the plugs mean?
Pulled the plugs on my newly arrived JDM H22 tonight, and the middle two plugs were covered in oil (threads and electrode). There was small amounts of oil running down the walls in each of the two faulty pplug holes. . .maybe it's just bad o-rings or valve cover gasket? What else could cause something like this to happen? Needles to say, I'm pretty peeved right now.

its either the o-ring gaskets on your valve cover or you didnt have the plugs torqued enough into the head. get your finger and stick it inside your valve cover and see if you get any oil on your fingers when you rub the gaskets are located.

what he said
So I'm thinking it's the O-rings and valve cover gasket that needs replacement. Here is my reasoning, tell me if it seems sound:
-There is small trickles of oil running down the bores of the two fouled plugs, and oil in the bottoms of the bores.
-The white ceramic (just above the wrench flats) of the plugs has some brown staining (like they had been covered in oil for some time...see pics). The two plugs that came out clean have no stains.
-There was a LOT of oil (it made puddles when I set the plugs down). I doubt this much oil could come from blown rings, and It certainly wouldnt be disobeying gravity and hanging out on the TOPS of the combustion chambers.
So I guess I should just go ahead and replace the valve cover gasket and O-rings? Should I take this up with the company that sold me the motor? I'm MUCH relieved, as it seems the symptoms are pointing to a simple fix, and not expensive repairs.

Yeah, it's just the o-rings around the spark plug bores.. swap out those babies and you should be ok. I replaced the o-rings and the V/C gasket for some peace of mind when I did my swap.
looks good by the way.. I hope everything works out for you! If I can help at all, let me know!
