Which helmet?
Whats an all around decent helmet that isn't too expensive? Also, i was looking around and saw some low buck ones for about 50 or so. they aren't brand names but theyre all certified and stuff. Whats the deal with those? Poor quality or just not popular?
What are you going to use it for??? If it's for a car (drag, road racing) then I understand why you're looking for a cheap price, but if it's for riding a motorcycle... don't go cheap!
They don't call it a "brain bucket" for nothing. I don't second guess paying top $$$ for a helmet or some leathers. Don't get me wrong, you will still get some good protection from the cheaper helmets (you're mostly paying for comfort, technology, and style on expensive models).
Some good inexpensive helmets are HJC and AGV (seen them going from $150+). The more "brand name" brands are Arai and Shoei. Suomy's are nice, but from my understanding, some tracks don't accept them becuase they are not Snell apporved (they have british standards)

It's gonna be used for motorcycles. and just to clarify, i cant use my auto racing helmet on a bike right? Something about peripheral vision being more limitied on the auto helmets?
You could use an auto helmet...I've seen a bunch of people use Simpson SA-rated lids...but I wouldn't recommend it, less peripheral vision being the main reason.
I've got an AGV X-Vent, and really like it. HJC's AC-10 is good too. Arai, Shoei and Suomy are very nice as well. Try some on at a local shop...some people's heads don't fit well in certain helmet shells.

Go somewhere and try them on, seriously. Each helmet manufacturer has a different "mold" they build their helmets too. You'll find that certain brands fit you better than others (example: I can't wear Arai's, but Shoei fits great).
A proper fitting helmet is probably the biggest factor in how useful a helmet is. If it's too tight it'll cut off circulation and get hot (and hence an annoyance, and take your mind off the road). If it's too loose it'll swing around on you when you crash and cause myriad problems.
From what I've seen, the cost of the helmet (assuming DOT/Snell approved) don't affect it's safety at all, they just affect things like wind noise, and venting/cooling.
I think the Shoei RF-900 is the best bang for the buck. It's quiet, comfy, and has great cooling as well as a quick-flip for visor defogging.

Aria Helmets are the best in the world. ? matter of opinion. Myself I had an AGV like no great venting held up well and 65+ laydown and fit my melon well. Like stated before go try them on each brand fits diffrent and some brands each model fits diffrent but don't listen to what someone tells you to get, buy the one that is more comfortable to you.
I have a Shoei Duhamel replica and have had no problems with ventilation, fogging up, comfort etc. I think all the companies listed in this thread so far are quite good. I think one thing is fit and comfot. Swing by a bike shop and try some on. Some just fit better than others. I tried an AGV helmet and I thought my brain was going to ooze out the ear-holes. Everyone's got a different lid so I'd take some time testing them out. Just my $.02.
I have the shoei RZ-1 model. i love it. got it for around $100 on sale. shop around and look for sales. they usually have sale if the model is gonna be discontinued. but get a good helmet. ur life depends on it.
