With abs, front and side airbags, and a frame that's much stiffer than the previous dc2 chassis, yes, the new rsx is a very safe coupe. You should know that the Type-S has a tendancy to bring its tail out, especially at the hands of inexperienced drivers or in rough weather.
If it were my kid though, I would get him a used car under $13k, simply because 1 out of every 2 kids crash within their first year of driving. With those kinds of odds, I would rather him drive a used car. There are lots of used si's and tegs that can be found for cheap. Tell him the money saved will be used to pay for his increased insurance when he gets in an accident. If he can make it through high school without an accident, give him the money and tell him he can use it for part of the down-payment on a new car if he wants.
Kids need an incentive to drive smart. Why not give them one?

give him an old car to learn in. then give him the nice car =P
Give him a 89' Red Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera. I drove the Red monster for 3 years, then my parents got me a brand new 2000 civic at the time. Its no RSX, but it was a new car!!!!
Trust me, he is probably going to get in an accident with the RSX or any car that he gets within the first year. Statistics show that the majority of first year drivers get into a little or a major accident their first year driving.
Anyways, don't have him get an RSX, let him learn on a old car first.
get him an old car to learn
then let him buy his own nice car!
too many rsx drivers with even a few years driving experience are blowing their k motors by misshifting, so i highly recommend letting them get very comfortable with smooth, light shifting in an old 81 accord or something. cheap car, reliable, and easy as heck to learn stick on.

if they want to get him a Honda, make it an Accord (4cyl.) or Passport (yes, the Isuzu Rodeo knockoff).
An RSX will give him speeding tickets, and he will most likely get into an accident with it which means more $$$
Face the facts...the statistics don't lie.

some 95% of males "seem like the racing type" at some time in their lives from ages 16-25
this is why insurance drops like a rock after you turn 25.
I just hate seeing money go to waste

you are paying for an S on your own? You're 17 so you have no full-time job. What exactly do u do? Selling crack to the kidz?
As far as a new car goes, get the kid a base RSX with an auto tranny. When I was 16 my best friend got a brand new black Camaro 6cyl with an auto. Sure, we smote the hell out of it but he never crashed it and he still has the car (we're 24 now) and although it doesn't run that well anymore it's still in one piece.

i agree with most of you about getting him a "beater" as a first car.Especially since his parents are gonna be making the monthly payments. Its much harder to appreciate a new car when your rents are making the payments for u.Insurance will be alot less for him also.that just gives him room for more spending cash for the weekends or so he can save up for a better car while he learns to get used to driving.I don't care how carefull a teenager drives, you just can't substitute getting the actuall driving experience for a while and getting used to a car and the road.
