Default Failed Smog Test

my check engine light was on and i didn't bother to check it before taking it in for the smog test i came home and checked the code , 41, and it was my primary o2 sensor.

here are my numbers:

Test 15 MPH
HC (PPM)
Max - Ave - Measured
61 9 114
CO (%)
Max - Ave - Measured
0.54 0.02 0.97
NO (PPM)
Max - Ave - Measured
813 66 8
FAIL

Test 25 MPH
HC (PPM)
Max - Ave - Measured
45 7 85
CO (%)
Max - Ave - Measured
0.53 0.02 1.33
NO (PPM)
Max - Ave - Measured
754 55 9
FAIL

do the numbers on the test indicate a faulty o2 sensor? if i replaced the o2 sensor will all my troubles go away?

also, i have an aem cai that i bought off someone else and it came with the CARB# placed on it. however, the smog station called sacramento and sacramento said that it was only valid for 94-95 integra's?

if someone could help me out, i have a few questions:

1. where is the primary o2 sensor located? i'm thinking it's the one on the cat, but i'm not 100% sure.

2. what should i do about the aem cai? i thought they were CARB legal for 94-99 integra's, what's the deal?

TIA

edit: the fvckers also failed me for visual because of the aem cai

The primary oxygen sensor is located in the A-pipe, near the left axle. Chances are, if it is throwing a code, it's bad. Replacing the oxygen sensor should clean up your emissions considerably. As for the CAI, the smog tech was being kind of a dick. If it has a Carb. # on it, it should have passed. You should call AEM or the air resources board and find out what the deal is.

It looks like you could advance the timing quite a bit to lean it out and probably pass. It might be too rich and fouling the 02.

This is what I use for legal issues about that stuff:

thanks for the replies fellas, i appreciate it.

b19coupe: as for the a-pipe near the left axle, where exactly is that? i'm not much of a grease monkey, do you think you could be a little more specific? i'm pretty sure i understand, i'm not under the car right now to see it, though i will be tomorrow. also, would a kragen or pep boys have the o2 sensor for a 98 gsr?

sp: how do i retard or advance the timing? and thanks so much for the url, i would never of found it on my own

and again, another for me

You can rent/borrow a timing light at Autozone.

Advance? Won't that make it worse? I thought you retarded to improve emissions.

The primary oxygen sensor is in the exhaust pipe just behind the engine. If you reach for the oil filter from under the car, your hand will be right next to the O2 sensor. It's not hard to find. Advancing the timing is bad for emissions, it will raise CO and HC, but it will have an even more pronounced affect on NOX. NOX cut points have been really reduced lately by the state. NOX is produced by high combustion chamber pressures and temperatures (over 2100 degrees NOX shoots through the roof). And aftermarket O2 sensors are available at most auto parts stores, including Kragen,Pep boys, etc. I prefer the factory O2 sensor.

looks like your are running rich...
fuel pressure
injector spray
plug wires (maybe a misfire)

b19coupe: i'd like to use the oem o2 sensor but i've heard it costing upwards of $100 at the dealership and even then, it may not be in stock. i can't afford to buy it online and wait for it to ship, my registration penalty is going up +$60 on the 16th thanks for the help bro

crazydave thanks, hopefully my mechanic will be able to check those out for me this weekend. if not, anyone in SoCal (101/405) wanna waste part of their weekend to help me?

one more thing, would an oil change help at all? i've only driven about 1000 miles since my last oil change, but it's also been three months and i drive hard occasionally.

well, i didn't need to buy an o2 sensor afterall, i just had to rewire it. the thing that took the longest was finding out why the cel didn't go off, finally after an hour i decided to reset my ecu and all my troubles went away well, i took care of the o2 sensor and also did an oil change if it matters.

i'll be going back to get my second smog test tomorrow, wish me luck!
