Is there a way to check engine codes without a speedometer?

Does anyone know or have done this? I wanted to mount my 5" tach and other guages in the stock cluster area but I'm still running the stock ecu. So I still need a check engine light. Thanks

run the wire to the CEL somewhere else in teh dash area and wire in a small LED light
