Default H22 rebuild: opinions of results: BUILDERS please reply

alright, heres the deal. me and my best friend assembled a H22 over the weekend. ive done it b4 and we went through the same process. we plastiguaged each set of rod bearings and main caps. everything went fine and assembly went pretty smooth. upon startup it ran like a charm. about 2 minutes or so into the warm up it started "knockin". i immediately jumped under the car to hear the "knockin" comin from the #3 or #4 cylinder area. problem is it went away, never to b heard again today. anyone got a clue to what it might b???? balancer shafts??? id really like a good opinion from a builder. we ended up lettin it idle for 30min then took it out for a 20 min drive afterwards. HELP!!!!
EDIT: i just got off the phone with my best friend. he said he let the car cool down and then they decided to go to the store and it made the noise immediately upon start up then just like that it went away also.

What type of gas are you using? PERHAPS.. it was knocking from detonating... Try retarding the timing a bit.. cause.. since it's doing that on start up.. perhaps it's knocking cause of the excessive timing advance from cold start... Not sure..just a guess.

well i assume he uses premium cause hes **** like that. we have the timing at 15 degrees BTDC but on the distributor it looks very advanced. its got a chipped P13 ECU w/ Ericks racing program. o yeah, its 11:1 Type S pistons.

Could be an oil pressure problem. Once the pressure builds, the knock goes away. However it should not be doing that at start-up. If it were me, I would drop the pan and try wiggling all the rods to see if one has excessive clearance or one got loose slightly. Other thing might be crank end play. Did you check it also? Could a thrust have come out? Last, pull the main caps and see if anything looks funny on the mains. BTW, I am NOT an experienced H block guy only experienced with B's and D's. Let us know
Earl

I'm sure the same principle applies for most engines regardless, B, D, H or even a 350.

well i dont think the timing is advanced but on the dist it looks advanced. according to the timing gun its perfect at 15 degrees. the guy that owns the car left me a voice mail. hes narrowed it down to between 900RPM and 1300RPM, other than that its never done it. thanx for the input guys, keep it comin.

update of the update: talked to my best friend, he retarded the timing completely and it still knocked. i told him to do what earl said and drain the pan and try to shake the rods. maybe this weekend it will b tear down time again. i might just keep the ****** motor in the car though. i just dont know what could have gone wrong. plastiguaged everything and they were all within specs.
