depending on the year of the prelude you could tell by two things. if it is an 88-90 prelude s, it is a 2.0 carb'd sohc motor. the si is dohc multi-port fuel injection. if you are looking at a 92-96 prelude s model and si, then look at the block, if you can't tell the difference between sohc and dohc. the s model is the accord f22 sohc motor, and the si is the h23 dohc motor. both fuel injected.
Look at the Vin tag on the dash: it should be something like JHMBxxxxxxxx.....
the first 3 letters (JHM) indicate manufacturer. The next three characters indicate model. JHMBA8: prelude S, JHMBB1: Prelude VTEC, JHMBB2: Prelude Si.
