Default I need resident *expert* help: B-series tranny

I have a b16 LSD tranny on a GS-R, the gears are awesome...that is when I can get into gear

Here's the scenerio:
I have a relatively new master, new slave, and good clutch.
So I'm rollin around in any gear and I go to shift into 3rd or 4th and it wont let me in w/o full grindage...almost like I dry-shifted really bad. I am aware that the 3rd synchro is probably gone, but not all the time do I experience this issue nor does that account for 4th gear grindage, does it?

Now I've bled and re-bled the system, so I'm relatively confident theres no air in the system, I don't see any leaks in any of the lines
The other thing is that sometimes it feels like when I go to depress the clutch (after being run for a while) it feels like it's already engaged, and it jumps into gear, or it becomes difficult to get out of gear...like the clutch isn't fully engaged.
If I think of any other info I'll be sure to post it up...What do you guys think? thanks in advance for your help.
Mike

heres what i would check
1) pedal, readjust your pedal to make sure the slave cylinder is pushing the releast fork all the way, it could not be moving it enough

2)tranny fluid, when was the last time it was changed? 2 quarts of honda MTF never hurt anyone.

does this happen in all the gears? or just a couple?

Symptoms sound like a broken clutch disc spring. You sure the clutch is good? Also make sure that whoever changed your tranny fluid last did not use gear oil (90 wt.)

Trans fluid: 10/30( i think, whatever was recomended by the local shops), last filled/changed ~5k ago.

It seems only to happen in 3rd and occasionally in 4th. I notice the trans not wanting to let other gears release also, like 1st into 2nd, However this is also occasional. I experience the bulk of the problem in third only with the occasional exception of 4th.

clutch spring is something I had'nt considered, can you describe some other sytmptoms/what to look for(w/o opening everything up)?

If this sounds hopeless, forgive me...I have had this problem for a while and I cannot figure it out...

try honda fluid first

10-30 is too thin

you really think the viscosity of the oil will affect *specific* gears?

MTF has specific additives that facilitate smooth shifting, so changing from 10-30 to MTF can show a significant improvement in shift quality. If the problem you are experiencing is internal with the transmission, you should notice an improvement. If the clutch is the problem, you will notice little or no change. If you have to pull the transmission, inspect the clutch disc closely, paying special attention to the hub. Check the four springs see how well they are being held in place, they should be tight and secure, not loose. In many cases, when you remove the clutch, a piece of metel will fall out. This piece is part of the hub that is used to hold the springs in place. LOL.

first things i'd check:

1.make sure clutch is disengaging. check the throw of the slave cylnder.

2.change your tranny fluid and put in honda mtf. overfill it a little, since slightly low fluid can do weird things to a honda tranny. check the old oil for any metallic flakes.

Ok, I am now officially an advocate for honda fluids. I replaced the old stuff w/ the recommended oil and experienced a considerable difference in shift quality

It did'nt really affect 3rd, but I assume that's a synchro, however it made things a lil better all around

Thanks guys
