Default ignition timing

My engine has been making a ticking sound that is just barely noticeable, and I've been trying to get rid of it and make my engine run smoother. I've changed plugs, air filter, and had a valve adjustment done, and its still there. Also, my car is idling high around at 800 rpms (should be 700 +- 50, right?), not sure if that has something to do with it. Edit: I also switched to 89 octane to see if that would help, it seemed to quiet the ticking some, but its still there.

What should I do next? I was thinking that it could be the ignition timing. I'd like to get it running smooth incase I suddenly get the urge to turbo it

If it's ticking while idling that is the standard Honda Sewing machine sound, I too tried to fight it and gave up after endless nights in the garage. If it is pinging whuile accelerating under load, then yes retard your timing.

Thanks, at least I know its normal. I'll check the timing just to be sure and then give it up. My engine runs really smooth, its just kind of noisy.

The only thing I can think is the valve lash or injector pulse, but yeah I heard before it was normal, I was just determined to fix it. You have a 69 SS? I am looking to get a 67-69 as a project car, but I don't have a ton of money to spend. Anything you suggest, or suggest stayin away from?

Its really my dads, and the engine isn't original. It guess it depends on what you want. If you want a race car, then original engine doesn't matter. Just be careful of people selling base model camaros fixed up to look like SS/RS etc and claiming that they are the real deal.

I saw in the trader a 65 Mustang, the guy said he replaced the shell with a GT350 shell a few years ago, and he wanted about 25 K for it. That seems to be going too far.

this is normal, as someone mentioned before...its called the honda "sewing machine" motor. i first thought my valves need adjustment but everyone is tellling me its normal, almost all f-series do this as time goes by. i know people who have done valve adjustments to OEM spec and it still makes the noise. so don't worry about it. for me, you can _kind_ of hear when its idling but as the revs get higher, the ticking is faster paced until when you're past 2500 rpm it gets quiet again(maybe its just the outside noise and wind that is quieting it down, who knows). it does really sound like a sewing machine, and i am sure its not my valves. i also thought it could be noisy injectors, kind of like the same problem people are having with the b18c motors...its more of an annoyance than a real problem.

good luck.
