i would just say gut it out. take a jack handle, ( u know the long bar) and start banging out that honeycomb stuff.
cost = $0
maybe take 30 mins.

buy a test pipe, if you gut your cat, it can casue turbulence in the chamber and can cause restriction of flow
You should be able to get a Carsounds high flow cat installed for about $165. Thats what I'm going to, just because I don't want an obnoxiously loud exhaust.

I am not rich by any means. I just budget my money. I understand that you guys think its alot of money. But what I can't understand is $165 for a cat is alot but $1000 for a header is normal. Thats just wack. With a good high flow cat you should expect a couple horsepower for $165 and with a header you gain about 7hp for $1000. I'd rather pay $165 for a couple. And yes I know there are less expensive headers out there but since I have been part of this site thats all I've read about is expensive headers. Just my .02
I want someone to check this web site out. Its http://www.mufflertech.com and on this web site they sell 2.5 inch carsounds cats for $59.99 for a universal. Is this the same carsounds cat that you guys are talking about? This place also sells these cats on ebay aswell. If I end up buying a cat, I will most likely be from this place, unless some one tells me its not the same cat. Let me know.
I checked again and they have bolt on applications for 92-95 and 96-01 preludes for $89.99. I this place legit? let me know

I bet it is. I keep forgetting you guys 92-95 are OBDI and only have 1 O2 sensor. And I have the displeasure of having 2. I didn't see any for the 96-01 just for 92-95 for $89.95.

Get yourself a test pipe. it'll sound better than tearing the internals out of a cat.

a test pipe is just a strait pipe, usally the same size as your exhaust, w/flanges to be bolted on and off...insted of compairing price, why dont you guys compare cfm's?
There is one for the 96-01 is should be right next to the one for the 92-95 prelude for the same price, if you don't see it, but you want one give them a call.
so do you guys think that these cats are the same carsounds cat ya'll have been talking about. because $89.99 for the bolt on Carsounds cat for my prelude is a lot better than paying $165. ALso, the universal cat is $59.99 just to refreash memories, I think these are really good prices. Let me know

i gutted mine until I can get a race one.. being lazy right now. Exhaust is a little deeper and just a little louder (N1 catback)... nothing bad except for up a hill @ about 3500 rpm.. then it's obnoxious inside with a full interior. All I can say is thank god I put the interior back in at the end of the season, or i'd be deaf about now
personally id rather have a cat on. I have a test pipe on my 95 vtec lude and it sounds liek ****. you can totally tell the difference, you exhuast get's raspy and sounds hollow because it is. i recomend goin with the highflow cat. oh yea and your car will constantly reak of carbon monoxide.
OK. What are you folks using for the check engine light on OBDII when using the test pipe? I know on my last car I was able to get an O2 cheater. Is anything like this available for the Prelude?

Doesn't gutting out the cat or getting a test pipe make the car really loud and smell like exhaust? I wanted a spoon one but they said they are discontinued???
Has anyone had any experience with any others(catco, etc.), gains, loses, sounds?
