Auto body peeps-Take a look
My si's roof and hood are getting that 11 yr. old clearcoat burn. I was wondering if anyone had any sort of idea of how much paint I would need to fully respray the exterior of a hatch, and what the paint and primer would run? I have access to a prof. ventilated booth. I will be using the original color flint black poly(NH-526M-4) What would this run and where can I get it? Figured it would be better to post in ef forum than appearance.
As far as a price estimate, it all depends on how much prep work you want done as well. You could sand the whole exterior with 1500 grit like my bodyshop does most of the time, as long as whoever is painting knows how to paint. Or you could sand the whole car down to bare metal, prime the entire car, resand, putty glaze every single dent and door ding, the re-prime over that putty. The second method alone will cost you well into the upper hundreds just for the prep work. Like i said, the first method is perfectly fine as long as whoever is painting knows what they're doing.
Then you have to think about what color you want to use, whether it be single stage(paint and clearcoat combined into one mixture) or dual stage(base color with a layer of clearcoat covering it). "Flat" colors will cost less with less hassle than **** with mettalic in it.
Now think about how many coats of paint you'll want to apply.
I hope i made your decision easier somehow, and as far as a price estimate goes for your hatch, i know my bodyshop would quote you somewhere around 1500-2000 for a good, quality paint job that will last for years. that includes cut and buff too.
but if your painting yourself, um......you might want to have someone with experience at least in the booth with you just in case the **** starts to fly.
Make it easy on yourself. My bodyshop gives free quotes on anything. Just take a full day and run around to different bodyshops and get as many quotes as you can so you'll have a better idea of what to expect.
good luck, post some pics when your done painting.

Yeah my boy has access to a sweet booth in the a.m. hours, hell be spraying so its free cause my bodywork is done by yours truly as well. What i was looking for was where i can buy my stock paint and what to expect to pay- but thanks for the input fellow noob
There is a place here in the DC area called Mattos Pro Finishes that reps the Dupont Chroma paint system. I've had pretty good luck with it and the blacks arn't too expensive. I don't know if Mattos is local to you or not.
You will need around a pint of paint for just the hood and about twice that ammount of clear. Personally I like several thick coats of clear to allow me to sand out the inevetable flaws but with a little practice and a good work space you can get professional results. Expect about $35-40 a quart for the paint and about $30 a quart for the clear.

remember that you will also be buying catalyst and reducer. you should also buy primer sealer and primer surfacer.
1500 grit is too fine for a repaint. too smooth can cause paint failure....use 600 grit. you do not have to sand to bare metal if its OEM finish on there. all you do is sand 600 grit, glaze any dings, then spot primer your repairs. and wetsand primer with 400-600 grit.
when its time to paint, you spray about 1-2 coats of sealer to help adhesion, then about 3 coats of base color and then 3-4 coats of clear.
this applies to a 2 stage paint type.
using a HVLP spray gun will save you a lot from wasted material. so knowing how much material you need to buy will depend on what kind of spray gun you have.
