Ive thought about doing this myself for media and engine control, but I always run into a temp control problem, in the summer you car is going to get to hot, in the winter to cold. A computer should have a operating temp between 55 - 85 degrees.

actually comps function very well at temps far below 55 deg F. In fact, there are many liquid cooled computer cases that keep things running at temps far below freezing.

I would use one of the new nforce2 mobos it has on board 6.1 sound, nic, video (32mb) get cheap duron 800 for about 40 bucks put it in a case that will let plenty of air flow thru. Also need to add a big heat sink like fop38, alpha pal 6035. I would recommed getting a laptop harddrive because they handle shocks and bounces much better. I was going to build one in my car but i discovered the alpine 7894 mp3 player.

case 45 bucks
nforce2 150
heatsink 25
fans 30
duron 40
memory 65
cd drive 20
