Default DIY Alarm Install??

Has anyone installed their own alarm? Is it that difficult? I've installed a remote start before, is it that much harder? I'm gonna purchase an alarm soon, probably a 2-way lcd viper. The installation costs are pretty high, and plus most people say the major dept. stores do a shitty job anyway. So like everything else on my car, I wanna do this myself. Are there any how-to's out there? Thanks

If you can do a remote starter you can do an alarm too.

Your just the H-T Bob Villa aren't you? haha well I guess I need to know where is the best place to mount the brain, and how you mount it. Also, what am i going to need to install, like extra wires, test light, etc. Did you just splice everything? or solder?

Thanks

I did installs for over 5 years, and most important: DO NOT USE A TEST LIGHT unless it is computer safe! Get a voltmeter preferably. I personally witnessed a fellow installer set off an air bag with a test light, and know that a few other people in my company did the same. Not cheap to fix. Most places install under the drivers side dash, so guess what, every thief will look there first. Some good places are under rear seat, behind rear panel, but that takes running extra wire, so an easier option is behind glove box if it fits. On my own car I would solder all wires, but you can get away with crimp connectors if done right. I would still solder all the ignition wires, cause I have seen cars not start because of bad crimps.

not be an *** or anything you say that major dept stores do a shitty job, yes they dont do the most stealth install, they arent paid like that, go to an independant place and you will pay more and get a cleaner install i think, but if you have never installed an alarm before, im sure that retailer could do a better job than you.. when i install an alarm at work i take into consideration that most people dont know **** thats going on but i still hide the brain and make it look clean as can be w/ out taking 5 hours to instal it.. read up on installing and you should be able to do fine if you have installed a remote starter before..

Yes a criminal will look under the drivers side dash, but if its not there, all he has to do, is look at the ignition wires and trace them, it will take him maybe a good 3 minutes to find the brain then. not worth it running all the extra wire in my opinion, the criminal will still find it. The main reason I got the compustar was for the paging unit. yes the criminal can get in the car, but he'll set off the alarm for atleast a few seconds....it will be enough to send the signal to the pager unit.

anyways, i installed mine where the manual told me so...under the drivers side dash just like everyone else....

I didnt solder mine, i used wire tappers and crimpers. The wire tappers are great, but the crimpers you must be careful you do it right, otherwise you wont get a good connection.

And yes, a voltmeter is a better idea over the test light.

snap on sells a test light that works good (best buy approved) dont buy walmart **** unless you wanna burn **** up. and DO NOT PROBE WIRES IN YELLOW WIRE LUME(air bag wires usually)

I'm doing an install soon. I got Aladdin 2000 alram with 2 way paging and remote start. I'm going to try to be as slick and clean as possible and im also putting in a fuel cutoff switch. But how would i remote start the car without the fuel switch? I'm reading up on that trying to make it so that when i turn on remote start, i also disable the fuel cutoff. What do you guys think i should do?

i had a diagram of how to do this w/ relays but lost it.. maybe someone can find one.. i had it designed so that it would remote start w/ the keypad but not start using the key unless the relay was turned off

this is something I believe just takes time and patience. Something that either takes skilled machine work, or special training on the other hand i would pay someone (i.e. body work, port and polish, etc). Though I would love to learn.

Installing an alarm appears to me as just splicing and connecting wires. So someone please correct me if i'm wrong, or send me in the right direction. That's why i started this thread.

yep, its basically just splicing and connecting wires, but the vital part is the RIGHT WIRES.....and doing it in a clean manner..
