Default Question about Earl's "auto-fit" fittings/BSPT and NPT

Hi All:

Another one of these questions...sorry. This one is pretty specific though.

I'm starting to piece together the oil line kit for my turbo. I've been looking at http://www.amstreetrod.com (Thanks again for the link, Dan ).

This place does not sell braided line by the foot with ends already on it. Instead, you have to buy the line, the ends, and put them on yourself.

My questions are:

1) Do I need any special tools for the Earl's "auto-fit" style fittings?

http://www.amstreetrod.com/html/auto-fit.html

I've heard of people doing this before and ending up with bloody fingers and a headache.

2) Can I put a BSPT fitting (oil pressure idiot light) into an NPT tee? I had my block's BSPT fitting retapped for NPT. My plan is to run:

1/8" NPT to -4 AN adapter (thanks, Stan ) to
2 feet of -4 AN hose to
-4 AN to 1/8" NPT adapter to
1/8" NPT "tee"

Then I will put the oil pressure sender on one leg of the tee and the oil feed line on the other. The BSPT and NPT threads patters are the same except that the BSPT has taper and I'm assuming that is what gives it its seal. It should work in an NPT hole as long as there is teflon tape, no?

Thanks,
Sonny

Bloody fingers, lol. Make sure you wrap that SS line tight with some masking tape. The SS lining will split if you don't, and that leads to bloody fingers and lots of cursing! All you need to assemble those AN fittings are a vise grip and an adjustable wrench. They make AN wrenches that are the exact size of the fittings, but a adj. wrench will work fine. For using a BSPT into an NPT thread shouldn't be a problem. Just wrap the threads with teflon tape and there shouldn't be any leaking.

Yep, that should work, I would use teflon tape to help prevent any leaks. I have that exact setup pretty much, although I took out my idiot sender unit and have an oil pressure gauge there instead. I have plenty of pics of it if you want to see anything specific.

Use teflon paste, not tape.

Sonny,

I also recommend cutting the SS hose with a HIGH TPI hacksaw blade. Somet hing like 32 TPI or higher. The higher the better, you will get much cleaner straight cuts.

I also recommend using a bench vise for holding the fittings as you push and twist.

Good luck,
Randy

I know this doesn't help but Sirkid said "post em up!" so heres mine below-

I got premade hoses to avoid these headaches. I figure the guy that crimps them all day long can do a better job than me. If you opt for brass ends instead of stainless, it comes out pretty damn cheap.

other crap too-

As far as I'm concerned theres nothin' wrong with brass. I should put 'mcmaster carr *****' in my sig huh.

Randy,

If I get the those at the exact length need (2 ft), I won't have to cut anything in order to put the ends on, right?

Thanks,
Sonny

OK, here is the T coming off the back of my block (note: intake mani is not mounted) The line going to the left is to the turbo and the line going to the right is to my oil pressure gauge.

You can get the bspt fittings from http://www.pegasusautoracing.com, part #1073. It comes with the 1/8bspt mail to 1/8npt female, which you put into the block. Then put your 1/8npt male to -4an male fitting into that. For the stock oil pressure switch the kit comes with a 1/8npt male to 1/8bspt female fitting which you screw into the T fitting. Then the sender screws into the bspt female, since the sender has a male 1/8bspt. I have had absolutely no oil leaks on any of my oil lines using these fittings. I'd say get the bspt fittings to be safe. Oh, that site also has premade lines with fittings on them already too. I got one that was 21" in length that goes from my block to my T. HTH.

[edit again] Opps I just realized your block was re-tapped for npt. Anyways, that site may be helpful for some of the other stuff.[/edit]

Justin
