Sport FWD to slick or not to slick?
I do not have a rule book in front of me, yet. Nhra's new Sport Fwd class is gonna be on street tires, what do you guy's, and girl's think?Well this is some what serious, but whatever the rules say at least we all are at a disadvantage. Let's get some input, I want to see what everyone want's before I call nhra and complain myself. Jason

I voted for slikcs because If I can remember my NHRA classes right, the cars in there are making some pretty hefty power.
If slicks were illegalized in that class, I would run DOT slicks...but I remember the samllest size they make is like a 26x10x15 or something like that. That might be overkill for guys that are only making around 350 almost breaking 400

I can't vote but I am all for slicks, anyone who races FWD will know how hard it is to get the power to the ground. Add 1 to the PR0-Slicks vote. Brian
they(nhra) need someone to approach them in a professional manner and explain to them just how unsafe it will be for 500 hsp, fwd cars to run on street tires in a competition environment. its totally rediculous. someone will get hurt seriously next year......or worse. mark my words.
Karl, thanks, for the response, I just want to get opinions, if there are plenty of us with the same opinion, I will try my best to present it in a formal way to nhra. Jason

M friend kenny is going to compete in that class and he called the nhra office and asked about the slicks and they said yes they have revitalized it there going to allow slicks in the fwd class
Well that is very good, I am not gonna worry rules are rules, but safety will be compromised. I will call nhra tommorow and try to get some facts. Jason

I definately agree on the safety factor. I feel slicks are a def NEED not want of the street fwd class. People that want to run street tires can run bracket. If the NHRA is as serious about this class as they are trying to make it out, slicks are the only choice.
NHRA says slicks are allowed in the Sport FWD class. Decided on the change too late to get it in the printed rulebook. Complete 2003 Rulebook should be up on nhrasportcompact.com sometime next week, and will include all revisions.

I agree full heartedly in the use of slicks. I dont want to ice-skate the whole way down the track on street tires its just way to sketchy. I dont have enough money to compete in the HR class.. and its pointless to try to drive a 500+hp car with any type of street approved tire. I would hate to think all of this saving and hard work would literally go up in smoke...tire smoke..
You simply cannot stuff a big enough drag radial under there to be safely pointing the car in one direction...nevermind trying to turn off and head towards the pits.. you'd have to make a 2134346 point turn to go anywhere but straight.
Blah..
I am PRO SLICKS.

That is terrific! Thanks for the update, i should have emailed you before I posted that. D-man sorry, you can still run street tires if you want though. Jason

1. i'm sorry D-man, but the class will allow slicks. care to make a wager???? say, 10 honda tech percentage points??
2. again D-man, i'm sorry, you see if you had ever driven a 500 hsp, fwd car to its full potential on street tires, you'd know what the **** we're talking about when we say its unsafe. build a car and you will learn. no offense intended.

i hope old guy is wrong and only posted that because he's gone senile
this would make sense in the na street class to some degree but, in the SR or PS class its crazy, cars like jasons and inlines cars are going to be in a lot of trouble. Find some good drag radials and turn down the boost or take a step up to the
HR class

HR class

the fastest cars out there are gonna be the one's with the most power and the most driver skill, regardless of slicks or not. you guys making less hp think you have some type of advantage with street slicks, but all you guys are pushing for is unsafe races. cars with 500-600 whp are gonna be able to push 26 inch mickey et streets, you think you guys with the bfg drag radials still have an advantage in street tires?

How's that for a suk up
Find some good drag radials and turn down the boost or take a step up to the HR class
but it aint looking good for us dot fans, looks like we'll still have to wait for a true street fwd dot class
ps...i just got an email from the nhra, they said the rules for sport fwd will be up on thier site by early next week.
