Default SMC vs. Greddy Blue Box

The SMC is a good option for people piecing together a kit and Hondata or AEM is out of their price range. Please don't just post that the blue box sucks, because it's really not bad. It may not be tuneable, but it's fine for lower boost levels. My question is will the SMC offer an improvement over the blue box and still be safe? I'm going to go the AEM/Hondata route eventually but if the SMC drives as well as the blue box and gives more power I might get it. The blue box is perfect with the exception of an area just under 3000 rpms while I'm trying to keep a steady speed. It will jerk, almost like it can't maintain that rpm level and will buck as the power goes off and on. I either just upshift or downshift, speed up or slow down to get this to stop. So what do you guys think? Should I stick with the blue box until I have the cash for AEM/Hondata or get the SMC to tide me over until I can afford AEM/Hondata?

The SMC is superior for one simple reason: it's adjustable!

I would stick with the blue box if you intend to stay under 8psi. That is because I believe that the blue box A/F ratio is pretty good up to that boost setting. I'm at 7psi right now and when under boost with the blue box, I'm right at the lower end of the rich spectrum on my A/F gauge. Others have also claimed that they've measured the blue box with a wideband O2 and have gotten very good A/F ratios at stock boost. If you want to boost more, go with the SMC.

Do any of you guys get slight detonation in cold weather sometimes? My timing is at 14 degrees, I run 94 octane and don't know if I should retard the timing even more. I'm only running 6lbs and it doesn't happen very often. I'm hoping the Walbro 255 will help.

Fredo, did you install your Walbro yet? I'm just curious how it runs/idles.
