being a 25+ year owner of japanese cars i bought a different brand of car... went from suzuki to honda. needed a reliable daily driver that wont break the bank on fuel economy. wife found a fresh listing on a '99 accord that has been well maintained, so my son and i quickly finished the fuel tank in the suzuki vert and wife and i ran to town with cash in hand to make the purchase.... new to me '99 honda
191, xxx km. engine replaced at 81, xxx .a/c/t/pw/pl/pm/ps leather well equipped good tires good glass
replacement for the geo metro/pontiac firefly/chevy sprint
with good maintenance i should see 400,xxxkm .....hopefully- vehicles are a terrible investment
a few quirks to work out (immobilizer key issue) but thats to be expected on this age of vehicle-worn out keys.
but does run very well, shifts very nice.
looking forward to gleaning info from this site and members , to make the car run its best and what parts/ repairs do and dont work.
i have already replaced the pathetic oem signal lamp/ park lamp bulbs with led units. installed a led flasher so the flash rate is proper. the drives side trunk lid lens has been replaced with a non- oem unit, the clear lens for the reverse lamp has a red tinge to it- and light bleed-thru from adjacent bulbs- so will look for an oem lens.
have ordered new headlamps- so cheap not even worth me trying to polish them clear again- also have led headlamp bulbs as well.
has a stainless steel fart can muffler, installed at the dealership- not sure if i will leave it, or install an oem muffler.... 4 cylinders with open exhaust sound terrible, i like quiet as i commute everyday at highway speeds, and the drone does get annoying....
will be upgrading the audio- a new double din receiver, as well as a pair of 10 inch subs powered by a 1400w d class amp, maybe upgrade the oem speakers- those 6x9s are a pain to get at....
soon will be doing the timing belt / balance belt/ water pump etc etc as preventative maintenance. dont want the pistons kissing valves if the belt breaks. the suzuki 1.0 is non-interference- stripped belt at 163 kmh, reset timing, change belt in parking lot, keep on driving...
has an issue with the key immobilizer. car has randomly shut off at highway speed, green key icon flashing in dash.... a couple of restart attempts and it was running again- also has a crank / start die symptom , same green icon in dash-
may have to get new keys for it.
oh and key fobs are gone- none came with car.
what a pain in the *** to get at the hvac filters. then to have the incorrect one, THEN for the local parts house to have incorrect inventory....geeze should have put it on this rock auto order....
did order a replacement hvac control panel. had no heat on my drive to work this morning....but the heated seat is a treat...
now to try programming the new key fobs that arrived....
new headlamps arrived.
some rock auto parts arrived.
paint next month
tint next week
new keys next month ! shipping is terrible !
cant get the new key fobs to program to the car. tried numerous times using the ignition key/key fob button press/ cycle key blah blah blah
i refuse to take it to the local honda STEALERSHIP...went there last week about the car- 3 different people behind the parts desks, but i had to talk to each one of them about the car...and they were 3 feet away from each other- and they all had dumb looks on their faces when i asked about key fobs, keys and programming- that would cost almost $500 at the stealership-
i have dealt with this dealership before, when getting a o-ring for the oil cooler on a isuzu trooper- yes, isuzu trooper was re-badged a honda, when honda didnt have a ''suv''- they argued with me that the o-ring wont fit- yet i gave them a part #, which was the same as the honda part #- weird, the o-ring was the perfect fit...stupid parts people.
my code reader confirms that there are no issues with the ''immobilizer'' system in the car.
will leave the car at home today when i go to work-wife and son may tackle getting the front bumper off, so the new headlamps can be installed. then find a decent place to mount the trumpet air horns behind the front ''bumper'' plastic-those air horns are needed due to the STUPID people that drive around here-
will be tied into the oem horn harness , done right with relay and separate fused circuit.
will be nice, having new, clear headlamps with fire hawk led headlamp bulbs and led signal/ marker lights.
may have the wrong key fobs. will dig deeper into that issue.
old headlamp new headlamp led and pathetic halogen low beam low and high beam low and high beam air horn compressor trumpet horns below a/c line / battery all hidden behind the bumper/ trim plastic
installed the new headlamps. after wife removed the front ''bumper'' plastic she found a decent place to mount the air horns & compressor, close to the battery as well, so i could use the wiring harness from the other vehicle- worked out very nice. used oem holes in the car for mounting.
ordered the incorrect bulbs for the low beam, have to use the pathetic oem halogen bulbs until the replacement led units arrive-n oh well. still better than before-
still having immobilizer issues. yesterday it dies while driving and i had a hell of a time getting it re-started....finally restarted and back to driving-
if i bump the key just after it fires, it will ALMOST die , but then catches and keeps running- dont twist the key too far or the starter engages , making $$$$$ noises-
module in the steering column?
my code reader wont read all the modules, says communication error...?
code reader also says the ecm vin and car vin number dont match...?
my wife talked me into buying a newer vehicle, so i dont have to spend week-ends fixing vehicles- looks like own a newer vehicle, needs just as much work as my '90s cars....FFS
the '90s cars are so much easier to work on wiring wise. no stupid anti-theft bullshit to go wrong....simple OBD1 for repairing car, no special scan tool needed, just a fuse and read blink codes-
the window tint is a nice added feature. one major item at a time. still waiting on rock auto for parts....slow delivery this time- need to remove that silly ricer muffler.
much nicer looking AND sounding with the oem style muffler on the car. whomever thought fart can mufflers sound good should be shot for having that idea.
