D-series transmission question
I can't find this exact question and I also haven't been able to locate an affordable replacement around me so now I'm thinking about rebuilding it. I want to make sure I have an idea of what's wrong beforehand though. Basically everything shifts and drives great but if I shift into 4th and let go when I let out on the clutch it pops itself back out of 4th. If I do the same thing but keep my hand on it (not with pressure, just the weight of my hand) it stays in 4th and drives on like normal. Clutch is almost new. Pedal is adjusted according to book. All bushings throughout shift assembly are basically new.

Best case... you will need a synchro and a lock ring for the offending gear (at the level of damage that you describe... this is HIGHLY unlikely). Worst case... a 3/4 slider set, new mainshaft 4th gear, and a 3/4 shift fork... just to fix fourth gear. If it needs anything else, you will just be adding more $$$. You mentioned not being able to find an affordable transmission... I am not sure what your budget is, but I suspect that repairing your transmission will cost MORE than finding a used one. The good news is that at least you will then know exactly what you have. Rolling the dice on a really old, used transmission to save a few bucks sounds risky.
Thanks for the reply, man. You make sense. I'll keep looking for one. It looks like my best bet is finding a shell that has one and selling the shell after.
