Default Lost key

I have a 98 Honda civic lost the key, so naturally I took the ignition apart and took the tumblers out of it so I can turn the key hole and unlock wheel but now I just have a problem with bypassing the security part. Will any Honda key placed by the key switch work the same as the original.

Boy... you sure made that hard. You can get a new key from your local parts department with the VIN number... then marry it to the immobilizer and ECU and all is good. Any other key will still have to be "married" to the immobilizer and ECU... you will have to keep it taped to the immobilizer ring.

as far as I was aware chipped keys and immobilizer rings weren't until the 2001 model year. the OP's '98 wouldn't have that. Just needs the key based on VIN like you've suggested. part of why these were popular with thieves.

Or he could have checked the numbers with the tumbler out

Nope. My EM1 built in 1999 has an immobiliser.

You need to buy a chipped key blank. Have it cut to match the ignition and doors. Honda will program the key. The immobiliser is inside the ECU. The immobiliser ring on the ignition isn't coded. Its just there to get a signal from the key, but the signal needs to match the ECU. Thats why your car won't start with ANY key.

A workaround is getting a non immobilised ECU.

You are absolutely correct with respect to USDM Civics... other markets got the immobilizer system earlier.
