Brake fluid contaminated after 10 months?
2018 Accord Touring 2.0T. Phoenix, AZ. About 38000 miles on the clock.
January 2025; regular brake fluid change by local Honda dealership. A few days later while washing the car, I noticed stains around the brake fluid reservoir. Found the cap was loose and fluid had been spilling out. Dealership admitted mistake and cleaned the affected area.
November 2025; brake fluid had turned brown - like the color of strong tea. Only 2500 miles driven since January. As a precaution I had it changed again by an independent shop. They blamed the color on the previous incident, but that doesn't make sense - the cap was tight after the dealership cleaned up.
Never felt any loss of braking performance.
Since I'm now a bit OCD about this I've been checking the fluid more than usual, and one time I removed the cap, the rubber seal detached and stayed in the reservoir. So I just installed a brand new cap in case the last one is getting loose. The next step would be to replace the reservoir body but that also means purchasing a whole assembly that includes the master cylinder.
Anyone have any thoughts?
What would make the brake fluid change color in 10 months? Is it normal?
My other car, VW Golf, brake fluid looked like new after 3 years before I changed it.
cheers
