Default Fuel tank straps

1997 Civic HX, 5MT, stock, 315k miles

The original fuel tank straps have a rubber material on them on the side that has contact with the fuel tank.

All the current aftermarket fuel tank strap offerings that I have seen are just bare metal.

What is this rubber material ? What is the equivalent that I could put on a new set of aftermarket straps ?

I hit google for ya. Luckily I could reuse mine when I did my tank a year or 2 ago. But I wondered.

There's some universal stuff out there I figured. Browse this website below to find the size that fits. I don't know measurements offhand, and you have stuff in front of you.

Can be bought at Summit https://www.summitracing.com/parts/tnk-sl24

Just search summit for the part # of the size you need, tho the one I found might be fine. Cut length with scissors

Thanks for the info. I did some searching myself but couldn't nail down exactly what you shared. What I came up with was "Butyl Mastic tape" which I went ahead and ordered before I saw your post.

There are also some black "pads" of some sort of rubber/deadening material on the top part of the tank. I am thinking the butyl mastic tape can be used for that too, I hope.

The tape you speak of is soft. I use that stuff to seal wire connections on outdoor electronics. Its meant to form shape. Its not hard like you want. You need anti-abrasion protection.

Ok thanks again ! I appreciate the kmowledgable engagement. You have me going down a rabbit hole now haha. Please forgive my follow up questions.

The straps you linked to are a bit short per my measurement of the straps.

Looking at replicating those, what would you say is the best material to use
1) Butyl Rubber (you already ruled it out but putting it in here for completeness)
2) Natural Rubber
3) EDPM rubber (this is my briefly educated answer
4) Neoprene rubber

Thanks again in advance.

No problem.

Instead of making them from scratch doing R&D, spend more time searching what's already available. Your time has to be more valuable than $20 on amazon. See link below, there's tons of universal options, 6ft long, cut to length, different widths. Keep it simple!

Amazon Amazon

Funny thing I did that Amazon search already, those straps are for tractor trailers and are a bit larger than the 1" width I need (I measured the OEM straps). I may go that route but I have a couple days until the fuel tank arrives so just doing a bit more "analysis by paralysis" I guess.

One more thing, what is the diameter of the fuel filler neck vent hose, part number 17653-SH7-000 ? I ordered 5.5mm hose with the butyl tape because some ai search said it was 5.5mm hose, but that is actually the diameter of the part 17351-S04-A00 that goes to the vend valve.
