I'm doing some research on this exact problem. I replacing the engine for a guy who has a 2009 CRV with a K24z1. The place I called had two K24z engines listed for $750 on car-part.com with 90 warranty. The guy didn't verify a vin # I told him the year and model and he said he would check but when I said it's a K24 he replied oh ok does it have metal or plastic intake because plastic intakes don't have an EGR. He delivered the engine and I notice oil filter is in a different place but I was assured I will be able to basically drop it in. He delivered a K24A and dropping it in was totally wrong. Here's my list of differences.

K24z1

Motor mount bracket is different 5 bolts

Timing cover different because of bracket

Engine block has larger bolt hole for the bracket

Oil filter is located on second oil pan

Rear motor mount is attached to the oil pan

Exhaust manifold is shorter

VTEC spool has two electrical connectors

Throttle body is electric not cable

Intake runners has extra plastic reservoir

Water pump housing is different where accessories attach from the front

I did not notice everything at once so as I noticed something I thought oh ok I'll just transfer old to new. The old alternator and power steering pump won't mount properly. Found out water pump housing was different but I can transfer that and accessories will work. Intake different oh well transfer it too. Well hold up side motor mount bracket isn't going to match up in the vehicle, I'll swap it but then I notice the timing cover won't accommodate the bracket. New is 3 bolts and old is 5. Ok swap cover but can't do that because one hole on block is not big enough. And that was the straw that broke the camels back. The oil filter on the K24z is located on the second oil pan just above the oil pan. So in order to keep it the same you would need to swap the section above the oil pan. Last thing was the rear motor mount attaches to the oil pan so it needs to be swapped. The only thing I was going to not swap before the bolt hole discovery was the oil filter. After some reading there was something about not having any filtration of oil but not sure if that was only if you did a head swap of a different engine. But I'm not willing to take that chance. There is way too much confusion on these K24's most sites say they are basically the same and that's not the case. I've been waiting all weekend to getting the runaround taking up time and space. I have four other vehicles waiting for work to be done and I have only one flat spot for heavy lifting. Besides the guy is waiting for his CRV so he can do his food delivery. I'll post up if I come across anything else.

The crank position sensor is going to be a problem... the K24A has the trigger wheel on the crank snout and the sensor in the timing cover, whereas, the K24Z has the trigger wheel mounted on the rear counter-weight and the sensor in the block... and the trigger resolution for the latter is four or five times that of the former... this is a challenging conversion. Timing chain covers are not interchangeable.

THere doesn't seem to be any consistency or using K24Z isn't sufficient maybe the differences are in the K24Z1, 2, 3 and so on. This K24Z has the sensor in the timing cover like the K24A. I use Hondapartsnow.com to lookup parts numbers. They show two different oil pans but trying to figure out what's what, bseems hopeless. Not sure where to find diagrams of the Japanese versions. Obviously emission will be different.

The company that sold us the engine is giving the runaround and not calling back. Since old one was out I'm just gonna clean it up get it resurfaced and get back together. I have 5 other cars waiting but this one is in the only flat spot for heavy lifting and customer needs it back to do his food delivery gig. They don't care as long as they aren't losing money.
