I found that removing the front speaker covers helped with mid/high with my stereo system. The music just sounds brighter with the covers removed.
The carpet as well as the plastic vent holes block a lot of sound, just like on a computer case with the fan covers.
I used 6 1/2"" speakers with 6.5" foam baffles from Ebay. I am using the original plastic speaker mount, but I cut out the inside of the dome to still be able to mount the speaker to the door using the original screw holes.
Tools: Wire cutters/side cutters/Dykes. 5" grinder with a cut off wheel (Dremel works as well), Glue/Hot glue gun, Philips screwdriver (using a stubby as well a regular lengthened screwdriver helps), Flat blade screwdriver to remove the screw covers, Pliers and Satin black paint. A flat file is optional to touch up edges.
*I used stainless steel 1/8" construction wire for a speaker cover. I should have purchased black metal mesh speaker cover from Amazon to make this look a lot better as seeing the speaker as clearly as you can through the wire is pretty ugly. My wire was -$8/Ebay. Metal speaker mesh would be around $25 on Amazon. I recommend using steel over stainless at it is more easily bendable. Aluminum will bend, but if you bend it too far, it can snap off.
#1 remove part from the car. With a normal and stubby Philips screwdriver, you don't have to remove the door panel completely as you will have room to get behind the speaker cover to remove it. See pic below for the location of the 5 chromed speaker cover screws. Keep in mind that you don't have to screw this back into place, It can pop back into place so that you can remove and reinstall it while you are making changes to the speaker cover.
#2 Use the grinder/cutoff wheel to cut out the center of the speaker cover from the inside as you won't know where to cut if you cut from the outside. Look at the picture below to see where to cut.The whole ends up being 5"1/2 L x 4" tall.
#3 Place the cut out plastic piece on top of the wire speaker cover and cut off the excess, leaving about 1/4" on each side.
3.b Bend the edges up on the wire so that you make a rectangle shaped dish and push it from the inside of the speaker cover and allow i to protrude out of the speaker cover to the desired distance (see pics below). I chose 1/4", this allows about 1/8" to protrude out of the speaker cover.
#4. I spray pained the wire, then hot glued it into the speaker cover. I then spray painted it again as the glue was opaque/white. I decided to do 2-3 coats of light/medium coats of paint on the carpet so that it would turn black instead of brown. I kept the carpet in place as I didn't want the extra original speaker vent holes to show through the plastic speaker cover. Original speaker cover Parts car cover after being cut out Parts car cover after being cut out Inside section cut out. After after
Speaker cover removed. 1/8" stainless construction wire. Door open look. sizing the wire to the cut out plastic piece. Each square is 1/8". I bend 2 on each side (1/4"). Hot glue holding in the wire. Wire protrudes from the speaker cover.

Yeah, good point on removing the fabric before cutting. I can see this easily being made to look better with just a new screen cut to fit and perhaps using some plastic filler to fill the extra holes and remove the carpet/paint the plastic.
Also, small town MT, I don't even lock my car at home, so I am not worried about theft, but I do see the point. Thanks for the reply.

Thank you for taking my comment constructively and not offensively. In retrospect, it did seem kinda rude, but that wasn't my intention.
Thank you. I didn't take it as rude. I would rather have someone just be straight with me. It doesn't look good, but it helps the sound quality
In the not too distant future, I would like to make it look better. If/when I get around to it, I will post some more pics

I look forward to seeing it.
Me personally, I like the factory look, so I'd go with fabric versus screen. Since you've already made the hole in the plastic, you'll still have the increased sound that you wanted, and you wouldn't have to do all that work filling in the holes around it.
