Post 1992 Civic SI Rebuild

I've had this SI for probably 15 years, before that my friends family owned it for about the same amount of time. I've lost the actual chassis mileage over the years but it's somewhere in the 250-300k. Time to bring her back to new! I'm an autobody repair tech at a collision repair center in WA, follow along here or on IG @captainblue92si to keep up to date on my journey! Planning on doing a K-swap and upgrading most components of the car along the way! Not shooting for a full restoration, but almost.. any questions? fire away and I'll do my best to answer!

First step was getting it in my shop and getting the car mostly disassembled so i can do the body work and paint. Overall super happy to see pretty much no rust and minimal damage to fix. Let the games begin!

If anyone has a set of 6 body side moldings the thin ones, i'll buy them! Having a hard time finding a set to paint with the car.

Made some progress this week, from the prior photos you can see the car is in fairly good shape, not as easy to see in the photos with the faded clear but it has TONS of minor dents and door dings all over, however it does have all OEM honda parts on it, so i've decided to fix them all, It has had a skin put on the passenger door, and both bumpers replaced at some point in its life before i owned it.

Started with the rusty mess of an impact bar, the center section was half rusted off and was only held on by about 1/4 of the welds, i ended up leaving that piece off in the end.

Bumpers were both REALLY rough, but they are OEM so i repaired them best i could (rear had a tear half way through it from the bottom on one side, and a big whole on the other) front was in a little better shape and i ended up shaving the plate mounts and decided to paint the entire bumpers and rocker moldings body color.

Fixed the damage on car and did a skim coat on the large flat panels so they'll be straight as an arrow. Some pics in primer, some in filler, all the bodywork is done and it's in my painters hands now!

Was thinking about replacing the headliner fabric, but after spending some time cleaning it i think i'm just going to roll with it.

Last but not least, the new parts cart is about full - almost time for #2

I was going to change the color on it, but recently found out the color combo CaptivaBluePearl + EG was only available in 1992 which means its pretty rare so want to do it justice.

Only set I've been able to find is a CF Mode Parfume set on ebay, not ideal as I'd rather have oem clip style.. and I'm going to paint them so the CF will almost be wasted... oh well the build must go on!

First coat of polyester primer handblocked on doors and hood. These bigkid blocks are awesome!

Painter primed the body and fenders later that day

I will be taking out the sunroof assembly tomorrow before blocking out the car and fenders

Took out my sunroof to clean and freshen up, looked for a how-to to see if there was a decent one and there is on here already:

https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-...ic-eg-2955891/

Here's a few photos of the assembly before i got started: Some rust starting to form on the drain tube nipples, pretty much the only rust i've found in the car!

To take it apart for cleaning start with opening the roof:

There are three T30 Torx holding it on each side:

Next removed cross brace for cleaning, and outer tub seal:

Taking out the shade and sliders next, need to take out a few Phillips screws and pull the sliders down and out:

Cleaned all the parts I've taken out so far:

Sanded the rusted areas around nipples and seam sealed around them, then painted with some trim black. Greased up tracks and checked all other bolts/fasteners for tightness on the assembly before starting to reassemble. My motor was actually loose.

Reassemble is opposite order, minus the factory tint starting to delam under the glass pretty happy with how it turned out.

Got a few things done while waiting for my painter:

Sanded down and repainted my crusty old heat shields pretty happy with how they turned out:

Gas tank got painted in Polane with new straps:

Few new parts showed up: Rota Slips with Falken tires, Mode Parfume CF side moldings, Seibon CF hood. (the explosion was my wallet lmao)

Shipping/packing on the Seibon CF hood was A+

Thanks for the kind words! Was wondering if anyone would spot the rambler! Def get to work on some cool cars here that's for sure.

My painter has done some cool fade in/outs on CF parts, still undecided but I'll prob not paint any of them. I'm still in search of a JDM thin 6 piece side molding kit i can paint to match.

Mix of show car and racing?! It will be a garage queen.

Got some more cleanin done today! I believe my painter is going to spray it tomorrow!

Cleaned up some rusty under dash components, i do plan on doing the same to the pedals - same thing happened to them but can't really see them in the photos. Did some cleaning on wiring harness and under dash components.

Finished taking apart the dash for further cleaning and I scored a brand new OEM center panel for the dash also might try and fix this small gash near the bezel/radio (pretty much the only things wrong with the dash ) cleaned the rest of the dash parts as well.

We have been Captivated! She's back to her original look!

My painter is one of the best, lays it out like glass - pics are right out of the booth no cut or buff.

Here's a couple videos on my Instagram of the parts in the booth painted.

Got my gate hung and mostly built, piece by piece we go!

I appreciate this post!!! Reminds me of my restoration. (Link to Thread)

Never contemplated redoing the coating on the gas tank...but yours looks fantastic.

I hope you cleaned your AC box out. Mine was disgusting. Also, now is the time to add the cabin filter! Makes a big difference and is easy enough to do.

I was able to purchase a new rear impact bar not too long ago - check my build thread...

This post is gold.
My sunroof shudders when I open it.
I am sure it would benefit from a complete maintenance.

Appreciate that! Mine shuddered as well, after reinstalling and testing its great no more studder and smooth.. thinking it was the 3 loose motor screw/bolts.. i took mine all the way out and put some blue threadlock on them this time around forgot to put that in the OG post.

Happy friday fam!

Had some leftover sound/heat deadening material from the last full build i did made by AMD (Autometaldirect) they make lots of older muscle car parts. Decided to throw some up on the roof and in the quarters/wheel wells. Then reinstalled the sunroof and headliner.

Next i wanted to tackle the underside of the vehicle and engine bay before proceeding with building much more of the outside or inside of the vehicle. Pulled all the suspension, gas tank, and subframe/motor. Gonna strip the underside of the vehicle next, haven't decided on what I'm going to apply for coating.. i could raptor (spray bedliner) or undercoat. Gonna take the motor off the subframe, strip it down and repaint, then put everything back together with new parts.
