Rarely do people have issues with this unless the wiring has been botched.
What codes is it throwing?
Are you sure you bypassed the correct sensor? It's the CKF sensor on the front of the engine, not the CKP (cps) in the distributor that you need to bypass.
The CKF sensor is an emissions-only device and won't cause limp mode if the ecu loses it. You will only get a CEL.
If the ecu loses the CKP, you will get a limp mode because the ecu is guessing at engine position based on the other two sensors in the distributor.
You've likely damaged the CKP wire past your splice or you have swapped polarity with the CKF circuit. Double check your wiring. Make sure all of the contacts at the ecu are in good shape. You've disturbed 3 decades old wiring, solid chance something has pulled apart/cracked/worn out.
