Icon5 Need Help!

Hello,

Names Sam. I am in this forum for some help.

I recently acquired a 2000 Honda Civic EX with an Automatic Transmission and a D16Y8 engine.

Its a long story but my older brother didnt do the proper maintenance when he first bought the car and it over heated. It currently had rod knock, and its a horrible sound. I spoke to multiple people and they either told me
A: Tear apart and rebuild the engine
B: Engine swap it and keep the original engine in case in the future I want to sell the car and I can have everything together.

My questions are:
What engines match up with the stock automatic transmission?
What is a reasonable amount of money that I should pay to have the engine rebuilt?
Assuming I cannot find anyone around me that can rebuild the engine, what tools what I need for this specific engine?

I have rebuilt and engine in school before but it was with other people that were more knowledgeable that me, and I have the help from a professor.

I do not plan on junking the car, as it was bought in November of 2024 for 4,000 USD.

Please let me know your insight, and what is best for me at this moment.

Thank you and I hope to hear from you soon.

Personally, I would check/replace the rod and main bearings on your current engine, replace the oil pan gasket, and it should only cost you about 100-150 bucks. The Honda owners are very helpful on YouTube on how to do this. I had the same thing happen with my D16Y8, and one doesn’t even need to remove the engine. Be wary however, other components could have been damaged when overheated. If you did the bearings, even if something else failed, you would stillbe able to use that engine for a while before buying a new one.
