just took my VSS after thinking it was never coming out, 1st nothing was bolted, the actually shaft that has one bolt was missing the bolt completely. and same with the 2 on the sensor itself. And the one bolt hole for the shaft seems like the threads are bad idk if I had the right bolt if someone can get the specs I’ll go hardware store.
2nd seems like this vss was from the 1992 civic D16 while I think my trans is a GSR trans my questions is, is it even compatible and should I just try to repair everything and put it back I was getting power to my connector with multimeter but with it not being bolted down all the way would that cause it not to work, and if I get a new one will the d16 work or which ones will work for GSR trans
and I do have the pin that connectors the sensor to the gear somewhere.
It is in fact an Integra VSS... the gear at the bottom is longer from top edge to bottom edge than the SOHC Civic version. Since you have no ears on the shaft base to properly mount the electronic sensor on top, you will never keep the signal running effectively. The undamaged part would have two ears at the top for mounting the electronic sensor via two 6mm x 1.0 bolts. The tab/ear that you DO have should be the one that bolts the entire VSS assembly to the transmission clutch housing. Don't lose the adapter shaft... you will need it when you put the VSS all back together. Either find a known good complete Integra VSS or replace the lower portion of the one you have with an undamaged lower shaft housing. I believe you can use either a Civic or Integra housing and move your shaft and upper sensor parts over to it. Also, I cannot tell from your photos, but if the three male pins inside the top of the electrical portion of the VSS are not perfect (no corrosion or damage/erosion), don't bother trying to fix what you have... replace the whole thing.
So the gear I have is off an integra? I know the shaft and the sensor itself is off a civic but if the gear is from a integra seems like I just need a shaft and most likely a sensor. I went ahead and ordered a sensor, if I have integra gear I’m gonna shoot a shot and try the civic shaft with the missing ears and sensor with the integra gear. Like you said might not be the best electrical connection beings the top can’t be bolted but if I can verify it works with the civic shaft bolted to trans and sensor with integra gear that be a little relieving.
after some research it looks like the integra’s VSS 1994-2001 has a different sensor at the top. While mine seems to be off the 1992 civic mine originally came from. I’m just confused if I can even get the civic one to fit. Or if I need to get the integra one. I found the civic shaft and gear for cheap price while the integra gear and shaft seems to be pricey. So what VSS are compatible for the GSR trans
It has been some time since I have compared parts from a Civic and Integra VSS (and I am referring to MANUAL style sensors here)... but if my memory suits, I believe the only visible difference between the two is the height of the gear at the bottom... the Integra gear is taller than the Civic gear.
Electrically, the sensor on top is calibrated for different size tires, so the Integra sensor on top of a Civic sized tire chassis will make the speedometer read a bit fast. You MUST find a way to affix the electrical sensor to the lower housing portion of the assembly so that you can effectively mount the complete assembly... you cannot do this now because BOTH ears that have the threaded holes in them for the two bolts to attach the electrical VSS sensor are broken off. I believe you can interchange the lower housing portion from a Civic and Integra VSS assembly, so you could cobble together a complete assembly using a fresh unbroken eared housing, your Integra shaft, the safety clip which holds it in place, a union pin that slides into the slot at the top of the shaft (and the square side into the electrical VSS assembly), and then use an appropriate VSS top electrical assembly with good male pins... and if it is the wrong one, your speedometer will simply run slightly fast or slow depending on the combination of sensor and tire size.
thank you very much help. the previous guy had a ziptie running underneath the shaft ear that connected to the trans into the sensors bolt hole that supposed to be attached to the ears of the shaft. I think I might be able to make something work waiting on a civic vss to come in then i will try with everything actually bolted and connected and see what it reads. most likely will have to buy a shaft with the ears from either a civic and integra and i guess if the shaft i have is from an integra that should work or ill find one. thanks again ill come back in a couple days.
got it working hell yea thanks jrcivic. Defenitely need a new shaft with ears it goes off sometimes ordering a new shaft for $20. i was finally able to test higher rpms since i have 2 step set to 4.5k rpms before 9mph lets goo
haha bought the car recently still trying to get everything figured out. code 6,7,10 i believe all wire issues from the ecu so this will be fun. i got another problem going to make another thread if you think you can help me with it.
