Default B series small spline diff pin strength?

I've read everywhere that the small spline B series (years 91 and older) have weak diff pins and can explode under severe abuse. Something to do with the hardening process in the pin is different than the rest of the diff if I remember correctly.

Does this still apply to those transmissions with factory helical LSDs?? I couldn't find anything in particular about them. I am looking at buying a Y1 B16 trans with what I believe is an OEM lsd to go with my B20V I am building. I really want an LSD trans however the car is going to see abuse so I don't want to buy something that will just explode.

If it is a weak point I'll probably just wait to find a GSR trans and buy a used ITR lsd.

Small spline trans is only cable I believe. Your alternate choices are hydro. Keep that in mind.

The open diff has the weak pin. The lsd is the same helical as other b series of later years. I own a y1 and I put an ebay knockoff type-r clone lsd in it. Its worked fine on the street and track days. (With a b16 now). If you have an lsd in there, the open diff issue is erased.

I keep meaning to lookup the power rating of the small spline trans. I too have a b20v that I'm looking to run a y1 with in my crx.

Yes the car is an EG so I am not super keen on using a cable, but I really want an LSD for the car, but I don't have all the money in the world.

Do you mean the diff is the same PN or of the same construction? I would assume not exactly the same PN with the bearing size difference but I don't know for sure. I remember reading that the ITR & GSR diffs are interchangeable with each other, but not with B16/LS. And that B16 hydro and LS diffs are interchangeable.

I'll see if I don't end up buying that LSD Y1. I'll have to double check the gearing on it and see what GSR trans' cost locally + price of a used ITR lsd off the internet, because that was my other option.

I don't think you want to put a cable trans in an EG.

I haven’t heard too too much with spline horror stories really ,,,, but I feel like it’s the spline strength is a contrasting measure with the stock crank assembly “abuse” calculation. And u know 450 horse power is where they drawn the line before it gets upgraded & so unless ur running NoS or any other serious power plant I wouldn’t let mechanical paranoia disorder syndrome stop ya from pushing ur machine and having spline strength on the mind that has strong symptoms to make ur fun less enjoyable.
Orrrr….. Always keep thinking and worry about it while running 450 or less horse power set up and I might just cause it to explode with ur mind thru thought and worry, but I doubt it.

all in all u should be good with the drive train and it power output connection points if ur not running over 400- 450 . Or staying off the big NoS shot bottle,
