So my wife goes out and buys a 1978 Honda Accord. She contacted the seller and went and looked at it first. She then had me come with her a few days later. I looked it over and it is a very solid car. With about 35,000 miles on it. It is being delivered sometime today. Problem. It turns over and will run for a short time and then stall. I only hear the fuel pump running with the key in start position. It does not continue to run with the key in run position. Not sure where to look for where a relay would be located. I need a little direction. Thanks in advance.
It's home. Here are some photos of the 78 Honda Accord. I've been working though some of the issues. I got it to run yesterday after setting the float levels in the carburetor, fixing some fuel leaks, and getting the float valves installed correctly. By-passing the fuel pump and gravity feeding fuel to it it runs OK. The fuel pump does not pump enough fuel although it does move some fuel and is getting power to it in run position. Looks like it may need a fuel pump at least. I also noticed that the accelerator pump in the carburetor does not work like it should. The next step is to get a factory servicemen's book.
Congratulations, looks very nice.
Unusual for their fuel pumps to not pump enough, usually failing to start altogether, intermittently at first. Clogged inline filter just before it?
The relays providing power for initial priming also relatively reliable.
Looks like the damaged left front fender might be original compared to the more common later style right one. Honda even fitted the later ones under warranty since salt had them rusting through within 2 years, rather embarrassing.. before Honda added plastic inner liners for '79 or '80 (depending upon market), despite the rather differen wheelarch shape.
