just picked up a 98 cx hatchback with the d16y7, on the drive home from buying it the check engine light turned on and it started running like ****, surging idle when warm, and when i give it gas, it drops to 1000rpm and sounds like it wants to die but then immediately shoots back up to 1500-2000 surging, seems like someone’s already replaced the iacv, i also tore it out and cleaned the snot out of it. when i clear the cel it seems to run better for a while, not great, but better, until the cel comes back, then it does it again. any help would be greatly appreciated as this is my first car and i really want to get it running properly, also idk if this would affect anything but it has an oil catch can.

 

i would check your throttle body gasket and double check if it’s the correct gasket. manual and auto have different gaskets

 

i’ve sprayed carb cleaner around the gasket and it all seems to be in check, the idle seems to fix itself every so often, when i cleaned the throttle body and iacv it seemed to get better, but the surging idle comes when the cel turns on, although this time when the cel turned on it wasn’t surging the whole time, the idle dropped back down, and wouldn’t come back, leading me to think it’s the iscv intermittently working?

 

also when i plug the iacv port in the tb it stops surging, so it has to be the iacv right?

no lordco wanted $200 canadian for it so i just thought i’d try a knockoff, so far it’s been a huge difference, also found a pinhole leak in a hose and the high idle and surge is completely gone, i’ve taken it on a fair drive and it’s had probably 4-5 hours runtime today with 0 issue, idle dead on and zero stutters, FIXED!
