Default 2007 CR-V rear diff shudder

Hi,

New owner to my 2007 72k miles Petrol Ex Manual CR-V, loving it. I have noticed that in any gear when the revs are higher and the car is under load, uphill, I get a sudder throughout the car, particularly noticable around 60 in 5th. My garage has advised that the rear diff is shot and I need a replacement/refurb if we are to stay 4 wheel drive. I have read many articles around this issue but most say it is the rubbers or an oil flush is reqiuired.

Currently the propshaft has been removed as a temp measure. They say that if it were just the fluid it would only shudder at the end of a tight turn.

Question is, should I go for the rebuild, been quoted £1k or try oil and rubbers first?

TIA

Usually high speed vibrations with Honda AWD systems are failing u-joints on the propeller shaft.

Thanks, I will check that out but would have thought the garage should spot that. I do know that all of the rubbers at the back of the diff need replacing, I thought that was a good place to start.

Not entiely, still happens under load around 60 in 5th - it is better though. Maybe engine mounts need inspecting?

If the car does as following I would suspect driveshafts. When you accelerate from about 50/60 mpg you can feel a judder from the car but it calms down when you lift the throttle it is probably driveshafts. We have had the misfortune to have to do a few. It is only under load and at higher speeds that it shows itself. Honda CRV of this vintage were known for their 'chocolate' driveshafts. Not their finest hour, especially on cars that have been towing or worked hard. The petrol models were worse than the diesels in this regards as their driveshafts and inputs were even weaker. New ones from Honda are horribly dear, about £800 each !! But ebay is a good source, just make sure that they get you the right ones. The diesel are different to the petrols 29mm to 27mm ends on the shafts and auto ones are different to the manual !! Do both as they will both have worn... We tried one once and it always ended up needing both.

Thanks for the advice, I will get the drive shafts inspected. Presume this is just front or would you suspect rear also?

normally just the fronts, never done a rear one ever. Very hard to see when inspecting tbh. Its normally in the CV joints but hard to see which makes it hard !!

Booked in for front drive shaft replacements now. Tried a few more things over the past year such as swapping out the rear diff, replaced all mounting rubbers and driveshaft donut, so only front drive shafts left (though the garage says mine don't have play in them) as engine mounts also inspected. If this is the fix then it's great but for drive shafts to go on a 70k mile car, they are truley made of chocolate as previously mentioned.

Thanks for all suggestions and advice - we will find a fix!
